Figure 1 The battery in BMW E90 models is located in the right side of trunk, behind a trim panel. Read battery connection notes before disconnecting battery. Before disconnecting your battery, remove key from vehicle and store in a safe place and note radio presets. When battery is reconnected or loses its charge, the following items may need attention (depending on vehicle equipment). You may have to reset your clock, enter radio presets, initialize power windows, initialize the sunroof and normalize the steering angle sensor. Once your battery has been replaced, you will have to register the new battery with the vehicle computer system. This tells the DME the age and health of battery to ensure proper charging.
Figure 2 You can connect a battery charger directly to the battery or under the hood at the positive (+) and negative (-) grounding point junction. The battery junctions are located at right front strut tower, green arrow points to positive, yellow points to negative. However, I suggest removing battery from vehicle when charging. This will avoid filling your trunk with gas that the battery emits during charging. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on setting and using the battery charger. Jump Starting vehicle: A vehicle with a discharged battery can be jump started using a good battery or a good battery in another vehicle. When jump starting: Be sure to work in a well ventilated area, batteries can produce an explosive gas. Wear gloves and eye protection and if battery acid comes in contact with your skin, immediately flush with water and seek medical assistance. Move both vehicles close together but do not allow then to touch. Turn ignition OFF in both vehicles.
Figure 3 Connect one end of positive jumper cable to positive (+) battery terminal of vehicle with good battery. Connect other end of positive jumper cable to positive (+) junction terminal (green arrow) vehicle with discharged battery. You will have to flip open lid on positive (+) junction connection. Connect one end of negative (-) cable to negative (-) battery terminal of vehicle with good battery. Connect other end of negative (-) jumper cable to negative (-) junction terminal (yellow arrow) of vehicle with discharged battery. Start engine on vehicle with a good battery. Allow to idle, then raise engine to 2000 RPM. Next, start engine of vehicle with discharged battery. Once vehicle with discharged vehicle starts, shut OFF any electrical accessories, radio, HVAC blower, etc. Carefully disconnect jumper cable in the reverse order you connected them in. Allow vehicle with dead battery to idle to recharge the battery.
Figure 4 Working in trunk, twist trim panel lock counterclockwise then open and remove trim piece. (green arrow)
Figure 5 Using a ratchet and a 10mm socket, disconnect negative (-) battery cable. (green arrow) Move negative (-) cable aside and cover so it does not accidentally come in contact with battery terminal.
Figure 6 Release locking clips and open battery safety terminal cover. (green arrow) Photo shows lid open. There are two plastic locks on each side of lid you have to release.
Figure 7 Release locking clip and open battery power module cover. (green arrow) Photo shows lid open. There is a black locking tab you have to release. Press tab toward front of vehicle and open cover.
Figure 8 Then using a ratchet and a 13mm socket, remove battery power module nut. (green arrow)
Figure 9 Then using a ratchet and a 10mm socket, loosen positive (+) battery cable. (green arrow)
Figure 10 Lift battery power module up and remove from battery. You will have to detach clips at side that lock onto battery. Lift positive (+) battery cable off battery and lay aside.
Figure 11 Using a 10mm socket, loosen and remove battery hold down. (green arrow) Then disconnect battery vent hose. Lift battery up and remove from trunk. Be careful and make sure you have a good grip, the battery is quite heavy. You will have to move cables around and keep them out of the way as you remove battery from vehicle. Clean battery compartment thoroughly. Clean corrosion from battery cable ends if present. Before installing new battery, check that battery vent line is not pinched, in good condition and properly routed. Replace if needed. Install battery in compartment, attach vent line. Connect positive (+) cable. Next connect negative (-) cable. Install battery hold down bracket. Then reassemble trim cover and trunk carpet. Once installed, you will have to use a BMW scan tool to register the battery. This can be done by a capable BMW shop, I recommend doing it immediately after replacing your battery.

Did a battery change on my mom’s 2011 328i convertible 9/10 production N52n engine. Don’t work on it too often, not super familiar with the e93s. Ended up dropping some of the 90 degree trim fasteners down below the vibration dampener. Removed and unplugged the power distribution box but wasn’t paying attention to which “port” the black plug should go back into. From left to right, looks like the ports go black 1, black 2, blue, grey 1, grey 2. Blue goes to blue, grey goes to grey 1 with grey 2 open, but not sure if I would use black 1 or black 2. Realoem looks like it uses black 1 but several DIY videos show black 2 being used.

Hi, I just replaced the battery on my 2012 328i e93 N52. Car starts and runs perfectly, however, the convertible top wont lower it starts to go through the process and then gives a check control icon. Also, the windows no longer lower when opening the door / raise when closing the door. I have not yet registered the battery. Is this a coding issue? Any recommendations?

can you do hard reset to the battery? i.e remove the ibattery sensor, or remove the positive and negative wires for the battery. I pretty sure the was not reset properly in Battery Management system. not sure what my dad has done but car was working just fine with no motor issues, or electrical issues.

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

A hard reset will not adapt a new battery. I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes. If the system is not working properly, a fault code will be set. This will be your best bet when diagnosing. - Nick at Pelican Parts

You may have a parasitic draw. You'll want to monitor the draw on the battery when the vehicle is asleep. Here is a list of the specifications: https://us.autologic.com/news/mini-bmw-parasitic-closed-current-draw-specifications Once you confirm there is a draw. You will have to isolate the circuit with the draw. Then determine which components on that circuit is causing the draw You can isolate by removing fuses. be sure to have all the latches on the doors and hood closed (pin switches) so the vehicle will sleep during testing. If it wakes up, you will have to wait until it goes to sleep again. You can see how to perform the test here: https://us.autologic.com/news/testing-parasitic-draw-via-fuse-voltage-drop - Nick at Pelican Parts

Hey great writeup and pics as always. I just wanted to add a couple things bc in my own research I'm finding there's alot of confusion surrounding battery procedures.

This is from direct from ISTA_Document_SI_61_07_02_875 and basically it says always use the jump points under the hood for IBS cars.

"On vehicles with IBS, recharging the battery is directly at the battery terminals could lead to a misinterpretation of the battery condition and even unwanted Check-Control messages or fault-memory entries.
If the battery is recharged while it is installed, it must be recharged using the jump-starting points, whenever jump-starting points are provided in the engine
compartment all vehicles except R55, R56.
Only then can you be sure that recharging is correctly
recognised by the vehicle electronics on vehicles with
intelligent battery sensor IBS."

Also, there seem to be many varying reports on which scan tools and apps that claim to complete the registration procedure actually do so properly. What you are looking for is both the mileage of last replacement and the battery SOH/SOC state of health/state of charge in the histogram to be reset. I can't say which methods do/do not do this correctly but you can confirm it yourself pretty easily with INPA.

Finally, if you go from a flooded lead acid to AGM battery type, please make sure you code the change. You do not want a brand new AGM battery seeing 15+ volts from the charging system.

Hopefully this will save someone else some of the time I've spent reading up on this, because I'll never get it back lol. Thanks for the info Pelican!

Hi, I just purchased a 2007 328i sedan. It's had some electrical gremlins related to starting, headlamps don't always go off when they should, brake lights remain on sometimes and then there's the DSC codes, which are a separate issue. Battery is 3 y.o. but seems fine w/ 12.4 V, but I removed it and had it load tested. It's a 720 CA, 90 A/hr battery. It was putting out 758 CA and tested okay. Car has been scanned and has no codes except DSC bad motor, but I still think this other stuff could be a battery issue. Thoughts?

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

Could be water damage or a faulty electronic module. I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes. If multiple systems are not working properly, fault codes will be set. This will be your best bet when diagnosing. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Hi Nick,

Car is a 2008 320i and i just replaced the battery and as per the shop who did this said they registered the battery. Problem is every time i start the car a yellow battery sign appears and after checking the cc id code it showed 305. Searched what the code meant and it said “Check battery terminals”. I checked the terminals for tightness and everything seems ok. What could be the problem? car runs and starts fine.

Hello! Thanks for the step-by-step! I have a question: in pic. 5 you can see a small black connector that apparently remain loose. What is it for? It has 2 wires, red and blue, and is involved together with the thick red wire that leaves the IBS. I'm asking because I have this same wire disconnected in my car BMW 130i E87, and I have no idea what is it for. It's highlighted in the attachment. Thank you!

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

It is likely for additional component power from the rear power module. If you don't have the component, it will be hanging free. I reviewed wiring, but didn't see it noted there. - Nick at Pelican Parts

hello I got a 2010 335d and after returning from 2 weeks holiday I started the car and after 5 mins engine shutoff automaticlly. I'm presuming battery is dead. Am I right and if so how can i check with booster?. I checked the fluids and all seem to be okay. before leaving for holidays I noticed that alternator is charging battery @ 15V it that right or alternator is going bad; or battery perhaps

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

USually a dead battery will not cause a stall, once the engine starts. Especially if the alternator is supplying voltage like you noted. When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and fuel pressure, volume, quality and engine compression. Are there any fault codes? very sad with my car e90 328 sedan 2010. change the battery and register with carly bmw. but when I pass through an irregular road and in Dallas the streets are very bad, the car fails.

good change the spark plugs because I had a failure of the Cylinder 6, and the fault continues.

today reviewing everything again.

Observe that the battery is not fixed. does it move.

Buy the original but it's small. a little. and when I walk on a path I think it moves. And it generates the fault.

Fault Code: 002ACC
Fault Explanation: DME main relay, switching delay
Fault Code: 0029D2
Fault Explanation: Misfiring, Cylinder 6
Fault Code: 002E77
Fault Explanation: Ignition power supply.

I hope and pray God to understand me. my question how can I fix the battery better and if it is possible that this is the error.

My battery went dead due to 4 months of the car's disuse. I put a charge on it using a Ctek charger. I now have a full charge.

I had to input new date/time, radio presets. I also rotated steering wheel to both left/right extremes to get rid of the 4x4 warning light. I'm having a problem on my 2011 BMW X1 Xdrive N52 engine. All panel lights light up, however, the engine will not turn on. Fables also light up. My car has been idle for a long time. I had problems with valvetronic and for a long time I had to start the game many times. I think it made the battery run low. Do you think the problem can be low battery even if you turn on all the lights? Thank you.

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

Low battery can cause a no start, as well as a faulty valvetronic system. Start by confirming the battery is good enough to start the vehicle. - Nick at Pelican Parts

I have a 2007 BMW 328i Coupe and my problem is non-starting issue. Recently I purchased a SCHWABEN Professional BMW/MINI Scanner and when I scanned my vehicle the FAULT CODE I received was under the CAR ACCESS SYSTEM- A0B2/not present/CAS: Supply, Terminal 30E/30L.I went on YouTube and watched videos posted by others with this same problem. From what I understand I can solve this is a quick fix just by replacing one or both of the POSITIVE battery cables. I listed both part numbers from your website. #61-12-6-938-504 listed at $45.50 and #61-12-9-217-031 listed at $223.50. THANK YOU and hope you can shed some light on my problem. P.S. My car has been down since Feb. 18th.

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

if you are sure the cables are faulty and preventing the CAS from powering up, then that will fix your issue. To be sure, voltage drop test the cables and check power and ground to the CAS. Just to follow up, my situation was the negative terminal was disconnected but positive terminal remains in position. I connected jumper cable from donor car to the battery terminals at the front hood. And it worked. I could open the boot. Donor car did not even start the engine. i have foldable seats but the latches for the seats are in the trunk.

i removed my negative terminal on my E92 320 and accidentally close the trunk. Now it is shut off. Can i connect another extra battery to the hood plus minus get it to open? or should i connect to a battery of a running car

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

There has to be a battery in the trunk to make the jump start terminal work. Just had to help a friend cut a hole in his back seat to open a trunk which was closed with the battery disconnected... We opened the armrest, (his was a sedan) and used a hole saw to cut a 3 inch hole which we were able to reach through and pull the emergency exit cable. If you have fold down seats you don't need to cut the hole... - Casey at Pelican Parts

I am going to replace the knock sensors on my 2007 335i and was wondering what it meant in the disconnecting battery notes about making sure to note the radio presets. It is the first step.

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

That means to write down all of your radio presets that you'd like to retain after the battery disconnection. Not AS important when you DIY because you'll obviously remember the stations you like, but it is a nice detail that many shops and the dealer forget about. - Casey at Pelican Parts

Hi

How do you take off that little piece connected on the positive terminal? I know its not needed to be disconnected for battery change but im replacing the actuall connector piece and cant seem to get that little module off.
It seems to be the mrs module attached to the positive terminal for BST?
Any ideas to pry it off? Seems fragile..

Getting the battery registered and coded changed to an AGM type as soon as I can, but it would be nice to get these functions back.

Its just the navi screen in the middle, not the dash speedo/rpm etcthat just keeps on rebooting! What can be the problem??

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

Ok, you originally said dash screen, not specific enough for me, had to guess at which screen you meant. If the nav screen displays the BMW logo and is not starting, try holding eject on both radio and the Nav buttons & Volume power button for about three seconds, it should reboot. if that doesn't fix it, you will likely need a new navigation unit and programming. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Nick, I have a 2007 328xi coupe I purchased a couple of years ago for my daughter. Since I purchased it, it starts okay but if the accessory is left on even for one minute, the battery light comes on the dash and it either starts very slowly or cranks but won't start. I was going to put a new battery in probably aftermarket and have my dealer program it. Is it odd that it continues to start but can't be left on accessory for even a minute for two years now?

You may have a parasitic draw. You'll want to monitor the draw on the battery when the vehicle is asleep. Here is a list of the specifications: https://autotechdiagnostics.com /?p=185 Once you confirm there is a draw. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Recently replaced the battery in my 07 E90 wagon due to it being slow to turn over and not starting when it got cold. The replacement battery is the larger 110V instead of the standard 80V. Again when it got cold, my car wouldn't start. The dealership is telling me that because the battery is larger that the IBS went bad/melted. Are they feeding me bull? It acted the same as it did prior to us replacing the battery, which makes me think the IBS was the problem all along. Thoughts?

I have a "new to me" 2009 328i and the battery sound weak when starting. So I need to change out battery and am no where near a BMW dealer. Just got 335i 2008. Wouldn't start next day. Recovery came said I needed a new battery. Had one fitted AGM non-standard BMW. It wouldn't register when they tried. Reset clock and high battery discharge faults kept coming up. Replaced with another non-standard AGM. Problem disappeared. Next day, couldn't start car again. Recovery came and can't start this time. Eventually tow truck guy 'wiggles' module on top of battery and it starts. Took to main dealer today and had it replaced with standard AGM and registered. In your opinion do you think the non-start issues, high battery discharge messages and resetting of time and date settings are down to the battery not being registered or is there something else possibly going on. Was thinking IBS, 30g_f terminal, MPM relay sticking. I did have a code that recovery found which was A559 MPM intermittent fault but no date on it. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

the charging malfunction light is coming on in my bmw 645. The dealership is saying I need an alternator. Could a unregistered battery be the culprit?

Followup from the Pelican Staff:

No. It MAY have caused the alternator to go bad though. When you register the battery you are telling the DME that the battery is new and does not need to be charged as intensively as an aging one. By not registering the battery you put in a battery without telling the DME to tell the alternator to adopt the less intense "new battery" charging strategy. - Casey at Pelican Parts
