Sale of Recovered Stolen Porsche and BMW Racing Engines to Raise Money for The Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Charitable Foundation’s Cancer Research
The trustees of The Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Charitable Foundation have announced the recovery of several stolen Porsche and BMW racing engines, valued in excess of $1 million.
An open-house viewing session, with legendary racer Brian Redman as master of ceremonies, will be held on Saturday, March 25th from 2 to 6 p.m. at Pelican Parts, Inc., 120 Standard Street, El Segundo, CA, 90245. The engines will be sold in a silent auction at a later date, also organized by Pelican Parts, Inc., a web-based Porsche parts retailer.
In 2000, race-prepared engines for classic Porsche 917, 908, 907, and 911 racecars were stolen from locked premises in Los Angeles. The engines were part of Vasek Polak’s collection, and were owned by his Foundation. Investigator Paul Cohen, working in conjunction with Porsche literary author Wayne R. Dempsey, of Pelican Parts, Inc., which recently recovered the stolen engines from a warehouse in Los Angeles. Investigations to apprehend persons responsible for the theft are ongoing.
The engines include four new-old-stock (NOS) Porsche 917K race engines, one NOS 3.0L Porsche 908 race engine, one 2.2L Porsche 907 Hillclimb engine (771), and one 3.4L Porsche 911 race engine. About the Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Charitable Foundation, Inc.:
The Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Breast Diagnostic Center was created in 1986, as part of the Torrance (CA) Medical Center. It is the area’s first private mammography center to be accredited by the American College of Radiology. “Many people have asked why I don’t leave and take my success with me back to Europe,” Vasek was reported to have said. “I tell them that the United States gave me my freedom and success. I’ll keep my money here and die here with gratitude.”
Following Anna Maria’s 1993 death from cancer, Vasek donated $1.7 million to the Center; Dr. Ferry Porsche also greatly added to the contribution. The Center was re-named for Vasek and Anna Maria in 1994. Additional gifts by The Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Charitable Foundation, Inc., in 2000, have funded the creation of the Vasek Polak Research Program at Torrance Memorial, making possible Vasek’s dream of giving back to the community he loved for generations to come. Total donations in the name of Vasek and Anna Maria total $3.7 million. At the time of the accident which precipitated Vasek’s death, he was in Europe to visit Prague and explore the idea of establishing a breast cancer diagnostic center in his native Czech Republic. Following his death, the Polak Family Breast Center, the first of its kind in Europe, was established in Prague by Dr. Patricia Sacks, M.D., a consultant to the Polak Foundation. Dr. Sacks supplied the expertise to equip the Center and train its medical staff. She is also a founder and director of the Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Breast Diagnostic Center at Torrance Memorial.
