| Corey Poland | I have a '74 914. I bought it last year with a '71 1.7 engine. After driving it for a couple of months, I started having problems and I have to rebuild the engine. After reading some of the posts on several bulletin boards, I decided since I was going in I might as well make some improvements. I have managed to get my hands on a 1.8 big bore kit. I have had the heads rebuilt and bored to accept the kit. I have read several responses to the FI question concerning this set up, but I can't seem to locate it. What do I have to do to the FI for it to work with the big bore kit? I have also read that the studs should be replaced. Is this a good idea? If so where do I get them from? |
| Wayne at Pelican Parts | Hi there. The increase in displacement with the big bore kit is probably not enough to throw off the fuel injection metering system. It should work just fine with it stock. The studs may or may not need to be replaced. We replace them only if they are damaged. We can get you replacement studs if you'd like. Thanks, Wayne |
| Dave_Darling | If you have the 1.7's fuel injection, then you may need to tweak it a bit to get it driveable and running well. If you have the 1.8's, then you should be OK. Kjell Nelin bumped his 1.7 up to a 1.9, and tweaked his system until it ran well. He
even wrote up an article on the process. You can find it in the Tech Refs section of Tim's
914 Fan Page: It will be difficult to get everything set up unless you have some sort of exhaust gas analyzer. An O2 meter hooked into the exhuast should be able to tell you if you're lean or rich under any moment. --DD |
