With the fan and shroud assembly out of the car I prepared for the worst. Having heard all of the horror stories of beating the the unit into submission - I was pleasantly surprised. | A few taps on the bolt studs around the shroud and the alternator slipped right out. This was courtesy of the last person working on it that put some anti-seize on the flange. | With the fan and shroud separated, I turned the alternator over and sprayed some WD-40 on the shaft. |
A good tug on the fan and it came off without a fight. I taped the woodruff key to the shaft to keep from losing it. | The fan looked pretty bad but was in fine mechanical condition. It would just need to be cleaned up before painting. | The shroud was in basically the same shape. I used a Scotch Brite pad on it to smooth it out and take off the caked on stuff. |
