When performing repairs on your Volvo V70 it is important to be able to identify standard items and optional features. Volvo V70 models came in base V70 models up to the option heavy V70R AWD. In this tech article I will do my best to list each available item by model year breaks. I am going to list the standard options and the new options with the year they became available. The V70 covered in this tech article range from 1996: 2001, this is considered generation 1.

Remember that your car may have been serviced before and had parts replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If you're working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

Our vehicle may vary slightly from yours as models do change and evolve, as they grow older. If something seems different, let us know and share your info to help other users. Do you have questions or want to add to the article? Leave a comment below.

The original V70 was an update of the Volvo 850 estate car. The 850's square edges became more rounded. Other changes included a revised front end, painted bumpers and side trim, clear side marker lenses, and a redesigned interior. According to Volvo a total of 1800 changes were made from the 850 to the V70. Standard equipment was improved over the 850 with remote central locking, heated & electrically adjustable mirrors, 4 airbags, brakes with ABS and power windows becoming standard on every car.

Trim levels varied for each market, as did the equipment levels of the most basic trims. V70 model emblem badges denoted the engine type and to some extent the equipment level. The T5 and R were the series high-performance models.

Decoding your VIN

Your VIN (vehicle identification number) can be used to help purchase parts and identify vehicle options. The last seven numbers are all you need when ordering parts. However, it is important to know how to decode the entire VIN.

The VIN is located in many places.
Figure 1

The VIN is located in many places. Two reliable spots to read it are on the left lower corner of the dashboard (green arrow), looking through the windshield from outside the vehicle. Important VIN digit positions include: The first 3 digits are the country of origin. Fourth position is the vehicle model. Position five is the safety equipment, body style and platform code. Position six and seven are the type of engine. Position eight is emissions. Position nine is the check code. The tenth digit of your VIN is vehicle model year. Position eleven is the assembly plant, and the last six are the serial number.

The VIN is also located on the driver doorjamb, vehicle identification sticker (green arrow).

The VIN is also located on the driver doorjamb, vehicle identification sticker (green arrow). You can also find your production month and year (red arrow).

The sticker under the hood has emission, engine family and model year info (red arrow).
