Inspect intake air ducts and replace if necessary. Replace air filter.

A faulty throttle housing can cause a number of problems for your Volvo V70 from a check engine light to a rough or surging idle. At times I have even seen them create what feels like an engine misfire. Before you condemn your throttle housing, be sure to inspect all the intake air ducts, they should be well sealed and free from cracks or tears. You could any of the following fault codes:

P1620 - ECM-532D MIL requested by throttle unit - Faulty Signal DTC is found not active.

P1615 - ECM-900E Control module, internal fault- Faulty Signal DTC is found not active.

P1293 - ECM-914F Throttle position (TP) sensor 1+2 - Faulty Signal DTC is found not active.

ECM-9190 Throttle position (TP) Faulty Current DTC is found not active.

When replacing the throttle housing, it may or may not need programming. This all depends on if you went with a new part or a used one. At times a used part may plug and play and need no software. That is if the housing came off the same year and engine size, this is not a 100% guarantee, but I have had good luck. If the engine still runs poor or even worse than before, you likely need to have the software installed. Don't worry, you saved a bunch of money doing the repair yourself, paying to have the software programmed should be around an hour and a half labor.

First thing is to remove the intake air duct from the air filter to the throttle housing.

First thing is to remove the intake air duct from the air filter to the throttle housing. Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the hose clamps (green arrows).

Then remove the air duct (yellow arrow) from the throttle housing and air filter housing (green arrows).

Next, you have to remove the four 10mm throttle housing fasteners (green arrows).

Next, you have to remove the four 10mm throttle housing fasteners (green arrows). Once removed, lift the throttle housing off the intake manifold and place it aside.

With the throttle housing (yellow arrow) placed aside, you can now disconnect the electrical connector (green arrow).

To disconnect the electrical connector, start by sliding it off the metal bracket it is mounted to.

Here is the hard part. To remove the wiring harness attached to the throttle housing from the engine it has to be fished out from behind the starter motor. At times the electrical connector won't fit and the starter support has to be removed. What I do when this happens is, I cut the old wiring harness (green arrow) so I can remove the throttle housing. Then when installing the new throttle housing, I attach the install the wiring harness to the metal mounting bracket, then secure the harness in place with zip ties. This method has worked well for me in the past, it is up to you if this method will work for you. Reverse the removal steps to install the new throttle housing. Don't forget to install a new gasket and properly route the wiring harness. Once the new housing is installed, it may or may not need programming. This all depends on if you went with a new part or a used one. At times a used part may plug and play and need no software. That is if the housing came off the same year and engine size, this is not a 100% guarantee, but I have had good luck. If the engine still runs poor or even worse than before, you likely need to have the software installed. Don't worry, you saved a bunch of money doing the repair yourself, paying to have the software programmed should be around an hour and a half labor. If the throttle housing does require programming, you may have to tow the vehicle to the place with the tool to program it. It is up to you to decide if the vehicle can be driven safely the distance needed. I have seen some throttle housings totally un-drivable, and some that just had a slight rough idle that I was able to drive if needed. When done, clear any stored fault codes.

I recently did an engine swap because of an timing belt failure on the old engine which had 225k miles on it.
All sensors and the ETM are from the old motor which was running fine up to timing belt failure. The ETM had been replaced a couple years ago with an Xemodex rebuilt unit which was working great.
The problem now after engine swap is hard starting with both cold and hot engine,the engine cranks longer than normal before starting and it sounds like the engine is backfiring and kicking back against the starter. Tachometer is also sporadic while cranking. After starting the idle is rough and there seems to a misfire above 2500 - 3000 rpm when the the car is in park or neutral but not noticeable when the car is in gear and accelerating. While driving at normal highway speed the car seems to run Ok although the gas mileage seems lower than it should be, around 20mpg with mostly highway driving.
Most recently the engine refuses to start when the outside air temp is above around 20 degrees F, it acts as if it's flooded. The car hasn't started in the last 3 days as the temp was between 30 and 50 degrees F. I went out this morning when the outside temp was around 12 degrees F and the car started as it has been, hard start,rough idle,etc.
I have checked the air intake temp sensor and that seems to working properly. checked the injectors, they also seem to be OK, solenoids are working fine and the wide open spray pattern looks the same on all five. I replaced the thermostat and coolant temp sensor. I replaced the spark plugs and all the coils seem to be firing properly. I also checked the variable cam timing valve, all the passages are clear and the solenoid seems to be working OK.
My mechanic did check for codes and came up with codes for the ETM. My next step will be to remove the ETM and clean it. I have avoided this as the ETM is under the intake manifold on the turbo engine and kind of a pain to access, plus as I said the old engine ran fine with this ETM. The car also has the original ECM so it should match the ETM OK.
Any thoughts you might have on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

  Followup from the Pelican Staff: Before replacing, see if it needs to be programmed. Possible the programming was lost during the repair process. If that doesn't do it, you may need a new throttle housing. Of course, confirm the wiring is OK before replacing it.. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Janice Comments: Does this mean I can buy the part from you and take it to a foreign repair shop to fix it? I have a 2001 V70 AWD. The computer code is showing ECM 91A7. Throttle unit faulty signs. Could having the air ducts worked on solve this? Thanks, Janice Engle
