Are you getting tired of having your hood fall on your head? It's probably time to replace your hood shock. This is among the most disposable of parts on the Volvo C30. They wear out - it's just a matter of time. Replacing the hood shock is an easy task that should take no more than five minutes.

The C30 uses a gas-pressurized shock to hold up the weight of the hood. Over the years, the seals in the shock will wear and the shock loses its ability to hold the weight, resulting in a hood that won't stay up. Start by lifting up the front hood, and securing it using a long stick or have a friend hold it up. Make sure that this support is mounted securely. Pop each end of the hood shock off the ball pivots. Now clean and lubricate each ball pivot with a dab of moly grease. The new shock simply pops onto the ball pivots. Make sure you have the orientation of the shock correct. The thicker portion of the shock faces downward.

Carefully pry the hood shock off the upper ball pivot by using a large screwdriver behind the attachment point (green arrow).

Put a dab of moly grease on the upper ball pivot (green arrow) and then pop the hood shock on.

Now do the same for the lower ball pivot (green arrow).

Now do the same for the lower ball pivot (green arrow). Put a dab of moly grease and pop the shock on.
