Sooner or later, the third brake light assembly will burn out. It's just a fact of life.

The third brake light on the Volvo C30 differs from your typical light bulb replacement, as it consists of light emitting diodes also known as LEDs. When one or more of the LEDs goes bad, you have to replace the entire light bar assembly.

Replacement is super easy and should only take about an hour. In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with changing out the assembly.

Shown here is the third brake light assembly on the Volvo C30.

Begin by using a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the top spoiler cover up and off the base plate (green arrow).

Open the rear hatch and locate the three push clips that secure the rear of the spoiler cover to the car (green arrows).

Open the rear hatch and locate the three push clips that secure the rear of the spoiler cover to the car (green arrows). You'll want to push the center rivet inward to release the clips.

Shown here is a close up of the push clip as it is difficult to get aPicture with these installed on the car.

You'll want to push the center rivet (green arrow) inward and then pull the whole clip out. When re-installing the clip, leave the rivet sitting slightly outward and then push it in. You can now remove the spoiler cover.

Loosen and remove the two 10mm nuts (green arrows) holding the third brake light assembly to the base plate.
