Parts Required:

Starter inhibit switch

Hot Tip:

Remove the steering column to access the switch

Performance Gain:

Car will start again

Complementary Modification:

Replace clutch master cylinder

The starter inhibit switch prevents the car from starting until you press in the clutch pedal. This acts as a safety switch, preventing you from starting the car in gear. Over time, the switch can wear out, leading to a situation where the car will not start at all. Replacing the switch itself is easy, although it does require removing the steering column to gain access. Additionally, I recommend disconnecting the battery as a safety measure. See our articles on Battery Replacement, Lower Dashboard Panel Removal and Steering Column Removal for more information.

Shown here is the starter inhibit switch mounted on the clutch pedal assembly.

Shown here is the starter inhibit switch mounted on the clutch pedal assembly. When the clutch pedal is pressed, it pushes the contact arm (yellow arrow) up and allows the starter to operate. Press the tab on the electrical connector (green arrow) and pull it off the switch. Then pull the locking tab (purple arrow) down to release the switch from the pedal assembly.

Shown here are the locating holes (green arrows) on the pedal assembly.

Press the electrical connector back on and you are ready to reinstall the steering column and lower dashboard panel.
