The parking brake mechanism on the Volvo C30 is a little different than most cars in that it uses the rear brake pads to lock the wheels. Other cars typically have a set of brake shoes that clamp the inside of the rear brake rotors. I'd recommend checking and adjusting the parking brake anytime the rear brake pads are replaced.

Adjusting the parking brake is not too difficult and should take about an hour. It does require you to jack up the rear of the car. Both rear tires should be able to spin freely. Jack up the rear of the car and support it on jack stands. See our article on Jacking up Your C30 for more information.

The adjustment is performed on the parking brake handle through an access port in the center console. This article will go over the steps involved with adjusting the parking brake.

Open the center console cover and pull the drink holder (green arrow) up and out of the center console.
Figure 1

Open the center console cover and pull the drink holder (green arrow) up and out of the center console. Make sure that the parking brake is disengaged and the rear of the car is firmly supported on jack stands.

Below the drink holder is the access panel for the parking brake adjuster.
Figure 2

Below the drink holder is the access panel for the parking brake adjuster. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the cover off (green arrow).

Shown here is the 13mm adjustment nut (green arrow).
Figure 3

Shown here is the 13mm adjustment nut (green arrow). Have a helper turn the rear wheels while you turn the adjustment nut clockwise. Have the helper tell you when the wheels stop turning. At this point, back the adjuster off about a quarter turn. That's all there is to it. You can now put the access cover back on and lower the car to the ground.
