A few jobs on the Volvo C30 require removing the rear bumper cover to access the components behind the cover. Removing the bumper cover seems easy enough, but it is quite easy to damage the paintwork and also the plastic tabs that hold the cover to the car. In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with safely removing the cover.

Remember, take your time. Work slowly and you can remove the cover without damaging the paintwork. The bumper cover is held on the rear by a series of tabs that fit into slots on both the chassis and also the lower trim panel. You'll need to have a set of plastic trim removal tools to get the cover off.

Begin by opening the rear hatch and locating the rubber stop pieces (green arrow).

Begin by opening the rear hatch and locating the rubber stop pieces (green arrow). Turn the stop piece counter-clockwise and pull it out of the bumper cover.

Move to the left side of the car.

Left and Right sides of car: You'll need to use a plastic trim removal tool in between the seams of the cover and the body (green arrows) to pop the cover loose.

Left and Right sides of car: You'll need to use a plastic trim removal tool in between the seams of the cover and the body (green arrows) to pop the cover loose. This sounds a little easier than it really is. A considerable amount of force is needed to just get it started. Take your time and be very careful not to mar or damage the paintwork.

Left and Right sides of car: Once the sides of the bumper cover are free, continue pulling the bumper cover out from both under the taillight and also the top of the lower trim panel (green arrows).

Left and Right sides of car: Once the sides of the bumper cover are free, continue pulling the bumper cover out from both under the taillight and also the top of the lower trim panel (green arrows). This will take some time. Go slowly and work four inches at a time until the bumper cover is free.

Be sure to unplug the electrical connector for the license plate lights (green arrow).

And here's the finished result with the bumper cover removed.
