About one of the easiest projects you can do for the Mk4 Jetta is replacing the gearshift knob and boot assembly. Over time, the knob and boot are exposed to constant wear and tear. Replacing the knob and boot is super easy and should take no more than 15 minutes. Simply pry the base of the gearshift boot up and out of the center. Then pull the boot up and over the shift knob.

You'll see a metal locking ring securing the knob to the shift lever. Use a pair of crimping pliers to turn the end of the locking ring side to side until it breaks. Then pull the old boot and knob off and fit the new one. Once in place, use the crimping pliers to secure the new locking ring in place.

Press the rear (green arrow) of the gearshift housing to pop the shift boot trim ring out of the center console.

Note the locking ring (green arrow) on the shift lever. This ring secures the knob and boot assembly to the shift lever. Use a pair of pliers to turn the crimped part of the ring (purple arrow) side to side until it breaks. You can now pull the knob and boot off the shift lever. Remember to slide the new locking ring on before installing the new knob and boot. Once the knob and boot are located correctly, use the crimping pliers on the new ring, securing the knob in place.
