Be sure to remove the hidden 10mm bolt

A few projects on the Jetta 2.0 require you to remove the battery box to gain access to items below. In this article I'll go over the steps involved. Keep in mind that you'll need to disconnect and remove the battery to gain access to the mounting bolts. See our article on Battery Replacement for more information.

Loosen and remove the four 10mm bolts (green arrows) holding the bottom of the battery box to the chassis.

Loosen and remove the 10mm bolt (green arrow) in-between the battery box and the air filter housing.

Loosen and remove the 10mm bolt (green arrow) in-between the battery box and the air filter housing. It can be a little difficult to access. You'll need an extension to reach the bolt.

Slide the battery box forward so you can access the plastic piece (green arrow) holding the battery cables in place.

Guide the battery cables (green arrow) off the back of the battery box.

Now pull the upper and lower parts of the battery box out of the engine compartment.

Now pull the upper and lower parts of the battery box out of the engine compartment. Installation is the reverse of removal.
