Be careful removing the door handle cable

Complementary Modification:

Replace window regulator

Various jobs on the Mk4 Jetta require you to remove the inner door panels, such as replacing a window regulator or motor. In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with removing the front door panels.

Driver's Side Door: Carefully pry out the inner trim piece (green arrow), using a small flathead screwdriver.

Driver's Side Door: Work your way around the base of the panel with the screwdriver to pry it up from the door panel.

Passenger Side Door: Pull the cover for the armrest (green arrow) off.

Pry out the door light assembly from the edge (green arrow) as shown here.

Pull the light out and squeeze the two tabs (green arrows).

Loosen and remove the T20 Torx screw (green arrow) along the inner edge of the upper door panel.

Loosen and remove the three Phillips head screws (green arrows) along the bottom edge of the door panel.

Now pull the lower edge of the door panel towards you and push the whole panel up and off the top edge of the door.

Now pull the lower edge of the door panel towards you and push the whole panel up and off the top edge of the door.

From inside the door panel, pull the cable sheath (green arrow) back and slide the cable through the slit.

Press the tabs (green arrows) on the electrical connectors and pull them out of the remaining switches.

Press the tabs (green arrows) on the electrical connectors and pull them out of the remaining switches. And that's it. Re-installing the door panel is the reverse of removal.
