Replace mirror glass

The Mk4 Jetta has a set of plastic side mirror caps that tend to age rather badly due to oxidation and the elements. These caps can be removed to be refinished or to install new painted caps. The process is rather easy and should take no more than 30 minutes for both sides. The process is the same for both left and right sides. Note that new mirror caps will come primed and require painting.

Shown here is the mirror cap for the Mk4 Jetta. This one has certainly seen better days. The good news is that replacement is relatively easy.

Begin by moving the mirror glass all the way over to one side (green arrow).

Begin by moving the mirror glass all the way over to one side (green arrow). Reach inside the mirror housing with your fingers and pull the glass off.

If your car is equipped with heated mirrors, pull the electrical contacts (green arrows) off the mirror glass.

Place a long pick through the access hole at the bottom of the mirror assembly and into the release tab (yellow arrow).

Place a long pick through the access hole at the bottom of the mirror assembly and into the release tab (yellow arrow). Push the pick in the direction of the green arrow to unlock the mirror cap from the base.

Now lift the mirror cap up and off the base.

Now lift the mirror cap up and off the base. Installing the mirror cap is the reverse of removal.
