Remove front seats

Removing the rear seats is required for a few projects on the Mk4 Jetta. It can also be beneficial when carrying large loads and you need the extra cargo space. In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with removing both the lower rear seat cushions as well as the upper rear seat backs.

Begin by lifting up both rear seat cushions from the front (green arrow) and then folding them up from the back (yellow arrow).

Begin by lifting up both rear seat cushions from the front (green arrow) and then folding them up from the back (yellow arrow).

On the left cushion, squeeze the two locating pins (green arrows) inward until they are free of the mounting holes.

On the left cushion, squeeze the two locating pins (green arrows) inward until they are free of the mounting holes. Now remove the left seat cushion.

The right side cushion is removed the same way as the left.
Figure 3

The right side cushion is removed the same way as the left. Squeeze the two locating pins (green arrows) inward until they are free of the mounting holes. The seat cushion can now be removed.

Both the left and right upper seat backs are removed the same way.
Figure 4

Both the left and right upper seat backs are removed the same way. Pull the seat back release (green arrow) and fold the seat back down.

The seat backs are held in place towards the sides of the car by a cam lock setup.
Figure 5

The seat backs are held in place towards the sides of the car by a cam lock setup. The idea here is to use a large screwdriver to rotate the cam lock (green arrow) towards the rear of the car. This will allow you to pop the side of the seat back up, then off the inner hinge point (see following picture).

Shown here is the inner hinge point for both rear seat backs.
Figure 6

Shown here is the inner hinge point for both rear seat backs. When re-installing the seats, make sure the seat is secured on the hinge point correctly. Then give the other side a push downward to lock the cam lock around the other side. The rest of the installation is the reverse of removal.
