Having a burned out dome light can be frustrating, especially at night when you've dropped your keys. Changing the bulbs isn't difficult, but it can be a little tricky. In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with changing the bulbs.

Shown here is one of the two dome lights on the Mk4 Jetta.
Figure 1

Shown here is one of the two dome lights on the Mk4 Jetta. Both are the same, left and right. Begin by prying the dome light out of the headliner at the front of the light (green arrow) towards the front of the car. It may take a little effort to get it to release. Be careful not to damage the headliner.

Once the dome light is removed, squeeze the two release tabs (green arrows) on the electrical connector and pull it out of the dome light.

Turn the dome light upside down and slide off the plastic cover (green arrow) in the direction of the yellow arrow.

Once the cover is removed, you can access the light bulb inside.

Once the cover is removed, you can access the light bulb inside. Use a screwdriver to pry the bulb out from the side (green arrow).

When fitting the new bulb, angle it into place on the inner electrical connector as shown here (green arrow).

When fitting the new bulb, angle it into place on the inner electrical connector as shown here (green arrow). Now pop the other end of the bulb into the other connector. Reinstalling the light assembly is the reverse of removal.
