Replace brake lights

The VW Jetta uses a pushrod style brake switch to activate the brake lights. Over time, the plastic pushrod can wear and the switch can fail. In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with replacing the switch.

The first step is to remove the lower dashboard panel for access. See our article on Lower Dashboard Panel Removal for more information.

Shown here is the brake light switch mounted on the brake pedal assembly (green arrow). Turn the switch counter-clockwise to release it from the mounting bracket.

Now press the tabs (green arrows) on the electrical connector (green arrow) and pull it off the brake light switch.

Now press the tabs (green arrows) on the electrical connector (green arrow) and pull it off the brake light switch. Take note of the "ears" in the mounting bracket. You'll want to get the new switch to fit into the bracket correctly. When the switch is centered, turn it clockwise to lock it in place and plug the electrical connector back in.
