Front Inner Door Handle Replacement

The front inner door handles on the Mk4 Jetta incorporate the window switches, outer mirror switches and the lock buttons into a complete assembly. Over time, the plastic bits can wear out and the handle becomes inoperative. Additionally, there is a small tab on the assembly that can break off, preventing the operating cable from functioning.

Keep in mind that the handles are tricky to remove. You'll likely break the mounting tabs off the old handle removing it. You'll also need to remove the inner door panels to gain access to the handle. See our article on Front Door Panel Removal for more information.

Shown here is the inner door handle assembly for the Mk4 Jetta. This handle differs from the rear ones in the mounting. You'll need to work slowly to remove it without breaking the locating tabs.

Loosen and remove the Phillips head screw (green arrow).

Loosen and remove the Phillips head screw (green arrow). Also note the mounting channel for the cable (yellow arrow). These can snap over time, leaving the handle useless.

Carefully pry up the two mounting tabs on the door panel (green arrows).

Note the mounting tabs at the front of the handle (green arrows). You'll probably snap these off in removing the handle. The new handle will pop into the tabs on the door panel.

Push the handle assembly out of the door panel at the front (green arrow).

Once the handle is located, pop it into place.
