Front Door Handle Replacement

Front door handle

Use a small pick to unhook the cable from the handle

Complementary Modification:

Replace door lock module

Door handles get a lot of abuse over the years. This sometimes results in a handle breaking. In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with replacing the front door handles on your Mk4 Jetta.

Left and Right Front Doors: Loosen the T20 Torx screw (green arrow) inside the access hole on the doorframe.

Left and Right Front Doors: Loosen the T20 Torx screw (green arrow) inside the access hole on the doorframe. There may or may not be a rubber plug covering this hole. Simply pull out the plug if it is present.

Left and Right Front Doors: Once the Torx screw is loose enough, pull the end of the door handle (green arrow) out of the door.

Left and Right Front Doors: Use a small pick to pop the end of the door lock module cable (green arrow) out of the end of the door handle.

Left and Right Front Doors: Slide the handle slightly towards the rear to unhook the front of the handle from the pivot point inside the door.

Left and Right Front Doors: Slide the handle slightly towards the rear to unhook the front of the handle from the pivot point inside the door. Pull the handle out until it stops.

Left and Right Front Doors: Now rotate the handle until you can pull it out of the doorframe.

Left and Right Front Doors: Now rotate the handle until you can pull it out of the doorframe. Note the small gasket (green arrow) on the handle. This fits inside the hole.

And here's the finished result with the handle removed.

And here's the finished result with the handle removed. Installing the new handle is the reverse order of removal. Make sure the end of the cable is firmly seated into the new handle.
