Front Bumper Removal

Jetta MkIV 2.0L (1998-05)

Front bumper

Hot Tip:

Have a helper hold the bumper while removing the bolts

Complementary Modification:

Replace front bumper cover

In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with removing the front bumper. Removal is easy and should take no more than an hour once the front bumper cover is removed. See our article on Front Bumper Cover Removal for more information. Keep in mind that you don't need to remove the headlights to perform the job. I removed them for purposes of clarity in the photographs.

Once the front bumper cover is removed, pull the Styrofoam (green arrow) off the front bumper.

Right Side of Front Bumper: Loosen and remove the two T30 Torx screws (yellow arrows).

Right Side of Front Bumper: Loosen and remove the two T30 Torx screws (yellow arrows). Then loosen and remove the two 13mm bolts (green arrows) holding the bumper to the front lock carrier.

Left Side of Front Bumper: Loosen and remove the two T30 Torx screws (yellow arrows).

Have a helper hold the front bumper and then loosen and remove the four T30 Torx screws (green arrows).

Have a helper hold the front bumper and then loosen and remove the four T30 Torx screws (green arrows). Now loosen and remove the single T20 Torx screw (yellow arrow). At this point you can lower the bumper away from the car.

And here's the finished result with the bumper removed.

And here's the finished result with the bumper removed. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
