A few projects on the Mk4 Jetta require removing the front grille. In this article I'll go over the steps involved with removing the grille. This is an easy job and should take no more than 20 minutes.

The front grille is held to the car by three clips (green arrows) as shown here.

The front grille is held to the car by three clips (green arrows) as shown here.

Begin with the outer left and right clips on the sides of the grille.
Figure 2

Begin with the outer left and right clips on the sides of the grille. It's a little tricky to explain how these work. You'll want to use a flathead screwdriver to wedge in-between the grille and the body. Then pop the edge up and out. Once the clip releases, you'll understand how it works.

Now stick the screwdriver in the slot just above the VW emblem.
Figure 3

Now stick the screwdriver in the slot just above the VW emblem. You'll want to lever the grille up and off the body. You should be able to now pick the grille up and out of the lower slots.

You'll also need to disconnect the hood release lever.
Figure 4

You'll also need to disconnect the hood release lever. Pry the clip (green arrow) up and off the plastic lever. Now use the screwdriver to pry the forked plastic lever (yellow arrow) open enough to pull the ends off the pins (purple arrow) on the release.

And here's the final result with the grille removed.

And here's the final result with the grille removed. Installation is the reverse of removal.
