Tools:

13mm socket, small screwdriver

Applicable Models:

VW Jetta GL (1999-05)
VW Jetta GLS (1999-05)
VW Jetta Wolfsburg (1999)

Parts Required:

Rear parcel shelf

Hot Tip:

Take care not to break the clips underneath

Performance Gain:

Access to third brake light assembly

Complementary Modification:

Replace third brake light assembly

The rear parcel shelf must be removed in order to gain access to the third brake light assembly. Removal is straightforward, but keep in mind that the parcel shelf is continually exposed to sunlight and heat. The plastic clips under the shelf are prone to being brittle and breaking when you remove the shelf. I'd recommend ordering three new clips before starting this job.

The parcel shelf is located behind the rear seats.

Pry the plastic covers off the hooks on the rear shelf using a small screwdriver (green arrows).

From inside the trunk, press up at the rear edge of the parcel shelf (yellow arrow) until it pops out.

From inside the trunk, press up at the rear edge of the parcel shelf (yellow arrow) until it pops out. Then slide the parcel shelf forward until the black plastic clips (green arrow) disengage from the chassis.

You'll probably end up breaking the clips trying to get them off.

Don't forget to unplug the electrical connector leading into the third brake light (green arrow).

Don't forget to unplug the electrical connector leading into the third brake light (green arrow). It is virtually impossible to get a picture of this with the connector plugged in, but you get the idea. Just feel for it.

And here's the finished result with the parcel shelf removed.
