Replacing Your Headlight and Dimmer Switch

The headlight and dimmer switches on the GTI MkV are not a typical high fail system on the car. That's great news. Equally compelling, when they do fail you can change them both out in well under an hour.

Headlight Switch - Begin with the switch in the off position (red arrow).

Headlight Switch - Press the switch straight in towards the front of the car (red arrow) and turn the switch clockwise until half way between the off and on position (yellow arrow).

Headlight Switch - Pull the switch out from the dash (red arrow) by the switch knob.

Headlight Switch - Pull the switch far enough from the dash that you can unplug the harness from the back (red arrow).

Dimmer Switch: To replace the dimmer you will need to remove the lower dash on the driver's side (red arrow).

Dimmer Switch: To replace the dimmer you will need to remove the lower dash on the driver's side (red arrow). Begin by using your trim removal tool and removing the trim piece on the end of the dash. Open the door and gently pry it away from the dash.

Dimmer Switch - There are four T20 Torx screws that hold the dash in place (red arrows).

Dimmer Switch - Pull the center trim piece straight back from the cluster.

Dimmer Switch: Use a T20 Torx and remove the single T20 Torx screw under the trim piece on the left side of the dash.

Dimmer Switch: Remove the two T20 Torx screws under the dash (red arrows).

Dimmer Switch: You can now pull the dash piece away from the dash (red arrow).

Dimmer Switch: Remove the electrical connection for the switch (red arrow) and then squeeze the clips for the switch together.
