The rear bumper cover on the GTI Mk4 can be removed rather simply and if you are careful you can do it by yourself and not damage the paint. The cover is more cumbersome than heavy but if you are worried about damaging it get a friend to help.

You will need to remove both of the rear taillights to remove the cover. Please see our article on removing your rear taillights.

You do not need to lift the car or remove the wheels to take the bumper off, but it will give you more room to work if you do.

With the taillights removed, disconnect the electrical harness for the license plate lights.

With the taillights removed, disconnect the electrical harness for the license plate lights. Squeeze in the two tabs (red arrows) and pull it apart.

There are four T30 Torx screws that will need to be removed (red arrows).

Remove the two T30 Torx screws from the top of the bumper cover on each side of the trunk opening (red arrow, one shown).

Remove the two lower T30 Torx screws under the bumper one each side of the license plate (red arrows).

Next remove the three T25 Torx screws from the lower section of the wheel well (red arrows).

There are two plastic clips on each side that hold the cover to the body (red arrow).

Pull the cover out away from the body to release the clips (red arrows).

On the back of the left side bumper cover you can see the license plate light connection and grommet (red arrow), the clips for the T25 Torx screws in the wheel well (green arrows) and the upper body mounting clips (yellow arrows).
