Removing Your Rear Center Console

There are lots of reasons for removing the rear console; from running new wires for a stereo or navigation system or deleting the arm rest to make room for sports seats.

There are a variety of options for the interior of the GTI and while rear consoles can be different the basic procedure for removal is the same.

Open the rear ash tray (red arrow)

Push down all the way on the rear section of the ash tray lid (yellow arrow).

Remove the ash tray (yellow arrow).

Our project car did not have the side covers for the ash tray.

Our project car did not have the side covers for the ash tray. If your car has them just pry them off with your trim removal tool. Then use the trim removal tool and gently pry up the two tabs (red arrow) on each side of the ash tray assembly and remove it.

There is a 13mm bolt (red arrow) holding the arm rest to the console.

Use a 13mm socket or wrench and remove (red arrow) bolt.

Pull the arm rest out of the console (red arrow).

Our car did not have rear cup holders but if your does push down on the two clips and slide the cup holder out of the console.

Move to the front of the console and use the trim removal tool to pry out the plastic covers (red arrows) by the shifter on each side of the console

Lift the console up from the rear (red arrow) and remove.
