Springs are usually a long life part on a car but if you live in a four season climate, carry a lot of weight in the car or drive a lot of rutted and bumpy roads they can wear out. Springs must also be inspected for rust. The spring carries most of its tension in the outer section and any signs of rust or crack on the spring should have you replacing them right away.

Remember to always replace your springs in pairs.

Changing the springs on a W204 is easy, if you have the right compressor; first safely raise and support the rear of the car and remove the rear wheels; please see our articles on these procedures for additional assistance.

Squeeze in the four plastic tabs (red arrows) and remove the plastic cover from below.

I highly recommend you use the spring compressor tool BM-924-0231 for Mercedes-Benz.

I highly recommend you use the spring compressor tool BM-924-0231 for Mercedes-Benz. Standard spring compressors will not work and use of a different tool can cause damage to both you and the vehicle. Warning: Never use air impact tools on the Mercedes style spring compressor.

Insert the larger disk on the bottom and place the disks as far away from each other as possible (yellow arrows).

Insert the compressor strut through the hole in the lower control arm and feed it through the plates. Rotate the strut so it locks into the tabs on the upper plate. Attach your 19mm socket and start tightening. The springs will compress while tightening.

With the spring compressed simple remove it from the control arm and vehicle.
