This article will show you how to replace the electronic ignition switch in your Mercedes C320. NOTE: The switch is included under Mercedes-Benz "theft- relevant parts program" and must be ordered VIN specific and reprogrammed by a dealership. To replace the ignition switch you will first need to remove the upper center console and light switch to get access to the dash screws. Please see our article on removing your upper center console and replacing your light switch module. It is not a difficult job, and while you can perform this work with a screwdriver, if you are going to be working on your own car, it is a good idea to purchase a set of trim removal tools. They are a set of hard yet flexible plastic tools of different shapes and sizes that are used in removing trim pieces. They work a lot better than a flat head screwdriver and there is nothing worse than ruining a "do-it-yourself" project by scratching up your car or damaging expensive interior pieces. Pelican sells a full line of these tool sets for under $20.

Begin by removing your upper center console. Please see our article on how to remove your upper center console.

Begin by removing your upper center console.
Figure 1

Begin by removing your upper center console. Please see our article on how to remove your upper center console. With the console removed you will have access to the two T20 Torq screws (red arrows) securing the dash to the center console mount. Remove these two screws.

Next remove the bezel or trim (red arrow) surround around the ignition switch.
Figure 2

Next remove the bezel or trim (red arrow) surround around the ignition switch. This simply unscrews counter clockwise. You should be able to do this with finger pressure but some trim pieces need a little help to get started with your trim removal tool.

Moving to the far left side of the dash, remove your light switch module.
Figure 3

Moving to the far left side of the dash, remove your light switch module. Please see our article on removing your light switch. With the switch removed you have access to the three T20 Torx screws (red arrows) securing the upper section. Remove the three screws.

Working below the dash you will need to remove the parking brake cable from the parking brake handle.
Figure 4

Working below the dash you will need to remove the parking brake cable from the parking brake handle. Lower the handle and move the cable until it can be slipped out through the small channel in the handle (yellow arrow).

Remove the three T20 Torx screws holding the lower panel to the dash (red arrow) along with the one T20 screw (yellow arrow) holding the dash.
Figure 5

Remove the three T20 Torx screws holding the lower panel to the dash (red arrow) along with the one T20 screw (yellow arrow) holding the dash. Note: a previous owner had replaced some of the Torx screws with household Philips screws.

Lower the panel.
Figure 6

Lower the panel. You will see a large electrical connection beside the parking brake, this is a data link. Once you lower the panel the connection can be removed from the back by sliding the top (red arrows) of the housing to the right.

Once the clip has been slide all the way to the right you can pull the switch out of the connection (red arrow).
Figure 7

Once the clip has been slide all the way to the right you can pull the switch out of the connection (red arrow).

The lower dash is now only held in by two clips, one on each side of the steering column (red arrow, one shown).
Figure 8

The lower dash is now only held in by two clips, one on each side of the steering column (red arrow, one shown). Pull the dash down to release these clips.

Next remove the parking brake cable (red arrow) from its holder and the dash is free to be removed from the car.
Figure 9

Next remove the parking brake cable (red arrow) from its holder and the dash is free to be removed from the car.

With the dash out of the way you can simply pull the ignition switch out of its place in the dash.
Figure 10

With the dash out of the way you can simply pull the ignition switch out of its place in the dash.

11: Remove the cable from the top of the unit by compressing the two tabs on the top and pulling it out.

Remove the four wiring plugs from the side of the unit.
Figure 12

Remove the four wiring plugs from the side of the unit. You are now ready to install the new switch. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure the air duct in the lower panel is seated correctly when reinstalling.

franko Comments: Thanks a lot for replying me.The only problem I am facing is that the engine will not Crank,I meant engine doesn't turn as the Ignition dashboard light is ON. The battery is fine, the other component like Front SAM module and Brain box are ok.It usually shows Fuel detector yellow light while the fuel gauge is high.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Ok, if it doesn't crank. You will need to confirm the starter is not getting the signal to crank. If nit isn't trace the circuit back to the EIS. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I can't help without knowing what is missing from the system when you are trying to start it. When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and fuel pressure, volume, quality and engine compression. Are there any fault codes? Once you figure out what is missing, it will be easier to diagnose.

Mike c220 cdi Comments: Hi. I have problem with ignition. Problem was start 2 days ago some times it work some time is not. Finaly yesterday stop work at all. So my question is.   Followup from the Pelican Staff: Most likely a power or module issue. I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes.

Bob Comments: A tiny plastic "nib" that holds the spring and red lens device in its track broke off. I took the spring out and reinserted the red lens device. It all works. If I buy a used device EIS, can the mechanical part be exchanged on the electronic portion. That way no reprogramming??

David Comments: All area dealerships price quote for the EIS are around $711.00 but will not sell one to me. Let along selling me a blue key to program the EIS. "Dealer programming & installation only" as I'm told.
Pelican Parts have it priced at $537.00 - way cheaper!! I will buy it in a hart beat if I can find a way to get it programmed to my car.
So, Nick, do you know of any other way to get this EIS programmed?
Thanks in advance!

David Comments: I'm running into a big problem on this EIS replacement project on my 02 C320 wagon. All disassembly information provided here are great! But I am not able to get ANY dealer or independent shops to sell me a blue key to program the new EIS from Palican, or to just program the EIS for me. All of them want me to tow my car to their dealership or their shop for the full EIS replacement service, costing $3500 to $1400. Kind of negates this whole DYI to save some money here...
I know you guys are local to me, know any local sympathetic shop that will program the new EIS or sell/rent me a blue key?
I am all for anti auto-theft prevention, but not to sell me a part for my own car?? I'm thinking more so they can keep the repair money in house. my next car wouldn't be a Benz...
July 19, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You won't be able to get a blue key. However, someone should be able to program for you. It's a matter of finding a shop willing to do it. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Benzman1910 Comments: Hi I have a 1999 e320.. the vehicle has a no start no crank. It came back to a k40 module. Now I've switch the k40 and it runs intermittently and when I does run I don't get any thingpast 2000 rpms.have you every heard of this. Is there a recall on k40 modules in this car?
July 18, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I have not heard of this. You tried driving it and won't accelerate past 2000rpm? - Nick at Pelican Parts
Black Comments: Hi Nick.
I have a Mercedes SL500 2003 and I am facing EIS Electronic Ignition Switch problem which has been confirmed that the chip inside the EIS immobilizer the black rubber as show in the attached picture is having problem.
No my question is, if it is possible for me to get anyhow EIS and transfer EIS immobilizer chip into my own and it will work without programming?.

What I mean is that, my key is still good, but my EIS immobilizer is bad, can I get another EIS immobilizer and just transfer it to the black box that came with my own?.
Will it work like that?.
That is, if a new chip is transferred to my EIS immobilizer box, will the same key of my car start the car without going throug programming the new EIS immobilizer chip to work with my old key?.
Please answer me now.
July 13, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: No, the chip can't be transferred, it will require programming. - Nick at Pelican Parts
David Comments: Hi Nick, if I order an EIS from you with my VIN & sign all the appropriate required paper, would it be programmed to my car & key? All I have to do is install it back in my car?
Btw, I was also told by a local shop that used EIS wouldn't work. So why do these salvage yards sell them?

David Comments: Hi Nick, my 2002 C320 base wagon had intermittent ignition switch problem that would get stuck not wanting to turn, or some time would turn & start the engine but none of other electrical accessories works dash cluster, seat controls, turn signal... etc. Just just week it stopped working completely, there is no sound of steering wheel unlocked, no lights on the dash, and can't turn the key. Key does lock & unlock the doors fine. Do you think it's a faulty EIS? Also to confirm that buying a used set of EIS with key off eBay is not going to work? Keeps seeing reference on reading the fault code, what tester do I need to buy to read error code? I know standard OBDII scanner can't. Thanks in advance! David
June 30, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hard to say. it is likely the EIS. Best bet is to check for fault codes. See if the EIS is malfunctioning when the key is inserted.

You will need an advanced Mercees-benz scan tool, something like an autologic. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Józsi Comments: Sorry, I did not mention that my car is a 1999 e320 w210.
June 17, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Ok, got it. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Józsi Comments: I saw many problems but not the one that I have. My car starts intermittently. The engine always turns over but does not always start. I need your assistance and input. What is the dealer cost of an EIS module? I thank you.

Bill '90 300E Comments: Recently got a great deal on a pretty nice 99 E430 sport with a broken key. I may part it out or try to get it running. To make sure that I don't waste $$$ on programming the key alone and then finding out that it's not compatible w/ current EIS and ECM, should I get all done at the same time? Is the ignition lock programming also necessary/required? There are some used parts on ebay that may work but I'm unsure of total compatibility. Any resources to check? Thanks in advance...
June 14, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: an EIS may work, but the key has to be fore your vehicle, matched to the VIN. - Nick at Pelican Parts
mrbroadside Comments: Hi I have a 2008 c200 put key in nothing at all, turns always to start position but no dash lights nothing... radio works ect, seats, mirrors fold out so presume battery is ok, is this the EIS issue
May 12, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It could be. I would check the vehicle for fault codes. if it is faulty, you will have either no recognition of the switch or a fault code. - Nick at Pelican Parts
RCG Comments: Does this process apply to a 1999 as well. Also, if the switch is ordered via the VIN number, is it still necessary to have it programed by the dealer. Thanks

May 10, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Applies to:
Mercedes-Benz W203 (2001-07)

The keys do not have to be programmed. I believe the switches do.- Nick at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: We don't currently have that tech article. If we get a chance to perform the procedure, we will be sure to document it.

I would grab a repair manual. It will have the procedure, special tools and torque specs.

Amino Comments: Hi there, thank you for the tutorial, i have lost all keys and now trying to remove the eis from my w203 auto, same as your tutorial however impossible to remove black connector with the black cable. Any ideay why? Thanks
April 23, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If it won't come it when the tabs are released, The cable may be jammed or locked, you will need a key to unlock it.- Nick at Pelican Parts
Van Comments: My thoughts too Nick. My local dealership however believes the solution is to replace the steering wheel lock, and if that doesn't work then to replace the electronic ignition switch. Naturally the steering wheel lock will cost $1,000 with no guarantee it will fix anything. Two days searching the web and I cannot find anything suggesting this would fix it. Could this just be the dealership trying to milk my pocketbook once the car it towed in to their shop?
April 20, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Impossible to say, I tend to think their experience alone helps them make inform decisions.

Historically steering locks have caused similar issue son BMW models, some models they have been removed completely because of it.- Nick at Pelican Parts

ben Comments: had check today by the locksmith turn out my key is good, he said there's no power from the key to the ignition, he said the eis need to replace either from the dealer. ive replace the battery twice, replace the aux battery also replace main relay, still not working, problem open door brake light n fog light is on, steering lock, insert key not turning, radio works n power seat work. i don't know what else i'm done tingkering this car..unless u have other suggestion..fyi im almost buy eis module with the key from ebay, but the locksmith not recomended..he said dealer have program the eis n the key in order this car will start
April 17, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You can't install a used EIS. I would take it to a shop, they will be able to check for fault codes and see if the key is being recognized. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Van Comments: 2000 Mercedes E320, both sets of keys will not turn in the ignition. Key battery is good, car battery is good. Once smart key is inserted I hear an electronic click sound, however key will not turn. Lights on dash come on. I believe it is the electronic ignition switch which is VIN specific and must be installed by a Mercedes dealer. Your thoughts?
April 14, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It is a theft item, so has to be purchased with proof of ownership. It does sound like the switch to me. - Nick at Pelican Parts
ben Comments: i have 2003 mercedes benz e320 ignition lock and smart key wont turn, remote dont work, fog light and brake light flashing when i open the door. replace main battery and auxiliary battery also replace relay battery still didnt work. could it be eis or key
April 2, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like the key. Do you have second one to confirm? - Nick at Pelican Parts
RC Graves Comments: I have a 1999 E320 I have replaced the key fob, because it was broken, periodically when I turn the key to start noting happens, after tuning back, removing and trying again the vehicle will start, it usually takes about two to three times to get it going.

Patricia Comments: We're at a loss as to what's happening with our ML350. This past weekend I went to start the car in the morning and noticed a slow crank. Husband dismissed it, but I'm the one who drives it and it's always quick to crank. It's happened a couple more times since then and twice we've smelled an electrical type burning smell. We're not driving it until we get to the bottom of it. Any ideas?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like a weak battery. Check the charging and starting system. - Nick at Pelican Parts
pringle2 Comments: Hi I 2004 clk500 im having problems with key not turning in the ignition. it works sometimes but not all the time. the keyfob works with other functions on the car but this. can I just replace the ignition switch or does it need to be programed?
February 5, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It has to be ordered from Mercedes-Benz with your vehicle ownership paperwork. SHould plug and play. - Nick at Pelican Parts
mpaull Comments: I have a 2003 E320 sedan. When it is cold in the morning, maybe 45 degrees or lower, neither of my keys is able to open the doors. No lights, no response. When the temp gets to about 50 degrees, no problem, works perfectly. It happens everyday. Ideas? Battery is good.
January 18, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like a module is failing. I would use a scan tool to check the signal from the key to the vehicle when the problem is present. If the signal is seen but not response, the module may be faulty. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Schweppes Comments: One more picture to be clear what I have written before.
January 15, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Thanks, appreciate it! - Nick at Pelican Parts
Schweppes Comments: The great thanks to the Pelican Staff, I would like with great satisfaction to inform you that you were right about my central locking problem and today I solved it. You were right when you said to lean towards the antenna amplifier. The problem was in the part of the antenna amplifier which is probably "RF" filter and is located on the antenna wires. The part is hermetic closed and is not clear what is the purpose of it. I successfully opened it and found "cold joint" on the red wire. Now it works perfectly. Thank you staff, I was nervous about the problem, now I am very happy.
January 15, 2016

redjohn Comments: I have a 1998 clk320 in immaculate condition. One day I went to put the key in and will not turn or make any noises, I don't hear a click in the steering wheel. Wheel is locked. I tried the spare key and the same thing. Nothing. the dash says take key. The battery has a solid 13 volts. Keys or EIS ?
January 8, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If both keys do not work, make sure the battery is charged and OK. Then the EIS is likely the cause. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Johnny Comments: I have a c200 diesel w203 and it will not crank. When i put the key in, the lock goes off and the power on key turns fine but when i try to start nothing happens, The starter solinoid dont click! But when i put + to starter solinoid by myself it cranks. And autodata dont get in to the ECU. The cooler fan is also on all the time when key is in the ignition lock. I guess the ECU dont get power but do you think the problem is in the Ignitionlock or the ECU?
December 15, 2015
Followup from the Pelican Staff: When you manually crank the starter, does the engine run? if not, start may be blocked by theft. The key may be faulty of the ignition. YOu will need to test it using an advanced Mercedes-benz scan tool. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Justin Comments: Proof read!!! On so it should have said, my key fob hasn't unlocked or locked my car. I always had to the key. But it always started the car.
December 7, 2015

Justin Comments: 2003 c230 kompressor my key gob never stopped unlocking and locking doors but always started car fine. Not when I put key in ignition it doesn't make the unlocking sound it did before and will not turn at all to start. My question is do I but a key to see if it is the key or is it common for it to be an ies problem? And is there some kind of package that has a new ignition and key?
December 7, 2015
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hard to say without testing. Using an MB scan tool, check to see if the key is recognized. I would assume the issue is the key. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Robert Comments: I have an 2002 E320, will a replacement that is a used EIS w/ Key work?
December 7, 2015
Followup from the Pelican Staff: No. - Nick at Pelican Parts
bg Comments: Have 1998 c200. Key won't turn. Lights on on dashboard, replaced key battery but it also can't lock the doors. Had earlier gone for diagnosis before key failure and it registered an eis fault
November 30, 2015
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Then the issue could be in the key or the key switch. You will need to get the exact fault code, and test the item it refers to. - Nick at Pelican Parts
ben Comments: Have 1998 c200. Key won't turn. Lights on on dashboard, replaced key battery but it also can't lock the doors. No spare key to try.

Pras Comments: I. have a 2002SLK 320 sports model. The key would turn but it won't start. There will be a 'start Error' on the dash.
The top won't lift off or on this is when even the car was starting couple months ago before it totally stopped starting.
MB dealer says it's the DAS module that needs to be replaced. Had taken it to another couple of local workshops that specialize in MBA/ European cars. They couldn't diagnose the problem. One said no problem with the car and it starts. It sure did and then stopped in a week! Same start error showing up. That's when I took it to the dealer.

What do you think is going on?
November 7, 2015
Followup from the Pelican Staff: i would have to go with the dealer's diagnosis, the DAS unit. If they ran tests, they are likely right. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Bill Comments: I have a 98 e320 and when you turn the key nothing happens also the windows don't go up and down and the remote doesn't work for locking the doors or anything could this all be due to the ignition switch and does it have to be programmed if I buy a new one? I put new batteries in both keys with the same result so I assume it's not the keys
October 11, 2015
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It could be the ignition switch. i would star by checking the vehicle battery. A new key will not have to be programmed, a new lock cylinder will. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Schweppes Comments: Couple weeks ago I asked about my w203 central locking problem and you gave me helpful instructions but I still have the same problem. I suppose that the problem is in the ignition switch, the part which is extremely expensive. The central locking system works only in specific situations especially when the car is exposed on the sun and the car temperature is higher. Please tell me how is it possible, and how higher temperature affect the central locking system ?
