Removing the lower center console can be time consuming but not that difficult. Remember the leather and trim pieces are not cheap so take your time and do the job right.

Whenever I work around the cars electronics I always like to disconnect the battery, it can not hurt anything and can save you the trouble of accidentally shorting something out.

You will need to begin by removing the shifter panel. While it is possible to take the panels off using a flat head screwdriver I highly recommend you purchase a set of trim removal tools. The trim pieces on Mercedes are not cheap and you do not want to ruin a piece by scratching it with a metal screw driver. Pelican sells a set of trim removal tools for under $20 and they last a long, long time.

Begin by using your trim removal tool to lift the shifter surround from the panel. Slip the tool under the bezel and gently lift it up. It is just held in by pressure clips and will pop out. Turn it over and remove the electrical connectors.

Lift up the leather boot and turn the knob on the base of the shifter. With the shifter loose simply grasp it and pull it straight up and off the shift rod.

Open the ash tray and use your trim removal tool to gently pry up the front of the shifter plate. With the front unclipped lift it up and out of the console.

You are going to need the move the shifter back to remove the ash tray. Because I have disconnected the battery and even if you haven't you shouldn't be turning the key on, open the cup holder compartment and lift out the coin slot. Under the coin slot is a plastic tab that will allow you to move the transmission shifter without turning the key. Make sure the parking brake is on and push down on the tab and pull the shifter back to drive.

Unclip the two tabs holding the ash tray in place and pull it straight back and out of the console.

With the ash tray removed you can see the two covers that hide the T40 Torx bolts that hold the center console in place at the front. Remove the plastic clips

Use a T40 Torx and loosen the bolts. They are eccentric bolts and will not come out. You may need to loosen them some more as you slide the console back.

Slide the cup holder cover all the way open and pop up the cup holder. Grasp the cup holder firmly between both hands and wiggle it back and forth between the front and rear of the car while pulling gently upwards until the holder pops out. Turn the holder clockwise and remove it from the console.

The cigarette lighter is held in place by two clips. Release the clips and swing the unit down into the cup holder area.

With the cigarette lighter folded down you can see the two 10mm bolts holding the console to the tunnel. Remove the two bolts.

Open the rear compartment and remove the two 10mm bolts securing the back of the console to the tunnel.

Slide the console back while lifting it up. You may need to further loosen the two T40 bolts at the front.

Disconnect the cigarette lighter wiring.

There are three wires running from the back of the console that need to be disconnected. One is a screw type coaxial cable, one a simply pulls apart and the other is an internet/phone cable.

Squeeze the tip phone cable and pull it out of the jack port.

Installation is the reverse of removal. Be prepared to tighten the T40 Torx bolts together once everything is lined up. These will pull together the lower console to the center console and snug up the gaps
