Clean light bulb sockets and replace bad bulbs

Mercedes Benz uses a bulb warning system on the w129 chassis. This bulb warning system monitors the voltage to the bulbs and can determine if there is a bulb that is not working. Sometimes due to an unusual voltage drop, the control unit that monitors this misinterprets the voltage drop as a bad bulb and turns on the bulb out warning light in the instrument cluster. You can remove your light bulb panel and clean the connections and replace the bulbs with the correct ones pretty easily. You can also totally remove the tail light lens if it is damaged. If you have water leaking into the trunk you may want to reseal the tail light lens if that is the source of water intrusion. In this tech article we will go over the steps to replace the tail light lens assembly.

ThisPicture illustrates the inside of the trunk on the left side.

Swing the light bulb panel away from the tail light mounting frame assembly and release it from the hinges (green arrows)

Unplug the electrical connector by squeezing it and pulling it away from the light bulb panel.

Wear some thin latex gloves, so you don't get your finger oils on the lens.

To release the bulbs from the light bulb panel push in slightly and twist each bulb 30° counterclockwise, then pull them out. Line up the pins on the sides of the bulb in their grooves in the socket. Look carefully as some sockets have off-set pins.

Remove the six 8mm fasteners from the tail light mounting frame.

Pull the tail light lens out of the body of the car.
Figure 9

Pull the tail light lens out of the body of the car. Some of the seal will stick to the body and some of it will stick to the tail light lens. Peel the seal out of the way. If you are replacing the tail light lens you will be installing a new seal. If you are reusing the lens be careful not to break the seal as this will allow water to leak in. Installation is the reverse of the removal steps. Fit the tail light lens to the body of the car with the seal properly in place. Install the tail light mounting frame and clip it to the tail light lens. Install and tighten the mounting fasteners. Plug in the light bulb panel, attach the hinges to the tail light mounting frame and swing the light bulb panel into the tail light assembly until the locking tab clicks. Turn on the key and verify all the bulbs work. Let there be light!

Followup from the Pelican Staff: We don't currently have that tech article. If we get a chance to perform the procedure, we will be sure to document it.

I would grab a repair manual. It will have the procedure, special tools and torque specs.
