A convenient and often overlooked safety item on your car is your outside power mirror. Mercedes Benz has used two mirrors since the 1970's to give the driver a greater view of the road as a safety feature. Power mirrors make it easy to adjust either side to provide the best view of the cars and pedestrians behind you on the right and left side of the car. It is fairly inexpensive to replace the glass element of your power mirror and also not difficult to replace the whole thing if necessary. We will cover replacing the entire mirror assembly and the glass separately. For just the glass, begin at step 7.

In order to properly service your rear view mirror you should remove your door panel. See our tech article on door panel removal. You may be able to pull up on the harness without removing the door panel if the electrical connector is in the right position. If not you could damage the connector. We have chosen to remove the door panel for photographic purposes.

The procedure for removing the side view mirror is the same for either right or left sides. We have done the procedure to remove the mirror assembly on the right side and removing only the glass on the left side of the car.

This picture illustrates the right side view mirror.

This picture illustrates the right side view mirror. Pull off the inner side view mirror cover by pulling it away from the door. You can use a plastic pry tool if you would like but you donÂ't have to.

Remove the three Phillips head fasteners (green arrows) that hold the mirror onto the door.

There may be corrosion on the electrical connector that you need to clean before installing the new one.

This picture illustrates the left side mirror. To remove the glass use a plastic pry tool to lever up on the mirror from the rear of the glass. Tilt the glass so it is facing up and lever from the bottom.

Pivot the outside of the mirror to the right until the ball socket on the glass (green arrow) pops off of the ball joint (yellow arrow) on the mirror assembly.

Unplug the heated mirror electrical connector by pulling it off the glass in the direction of the blue arrow.
Figure 9

Unplug the heated mirror electrical connector by pulling it off the glass in the direction of the blue arrow. Installation is the reverse of the removal steps. Line up the two ball joints with their ball sockets and carefully push the glass into place until it snaps on. To install the mirror route the one flat connector through the opening in the door frame. Mount the mirror with the three fasteners that hold it on. Plug in the two electrical connectors and tighten the retaining screw on the one connector. Install the side view mirror inner cover.
