Door stays eventually fail and when they do they can cause the door skins to rip over time. Replacing the stays are easy and cheap, replacing the door skins are not.

Before you begin you should park the car on as level ground as possible. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to work on the door while it is swinging open or closed. Begin by rolling the window all the way up into the fully closed position and remove the key from the ignition. You will need to remove the door panels to get access to the stays. Please see our article on door panel removal for further assistance. If you have the window all the way up you should be able to reach around the regulator to get access to the stays. If you cannot reach it you will need to remove the window regulator. Please see our article on window regulator removal for additional assistance.

With the door panel off carefully peal back the weather membrane from the door (red arrow).

Use a set of needle nose pliers and carefully remove the small circlip on the bottom of the retaining pin (red arrow).

Carefully reach in and remove the door stay (red arrow). Use care as the metal inside and around the door openings is very sharp and it is easy to cut yourself. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: To open the door, remove the door panel, then manually open the latch via the lever for the handle. Inspect the door module or wiring. - Nick at Pelican Parts
