Grille removal

There is nothing more iconic on a Mercedes Benz than that beautiful tri point star hood emblem. However due to weathering, accidents and in some cases vandalism, these emblems can be damaged or completely broken off, which in turn diminishes the look of your vehicle. Luckily, replacements are readily available, and it's a simple procedure to remove the damaged or broken hood emblem for a brand new one. All you need are gloves, pliers and a little bit of muscle to restore your hood emblem to its former glory.

To prevent damage and minimize movement when removing the hood emblem, place the grille assembly on a soft mat or blanket.

The hood emblem is fixed to the grille assembly via a spring lock.
Figure 2

The hood emblem is fixed to the grille assembly via a spring lock. The spring lock is composed of a metal U-shaped locking clip held under tension with a set of springs. Please take note of the metal retaining tabs and their location indicated by the green arrows.

Securely grab the locking clip with your pliers at the location indicated by the green arrows.

Use your other hand to prevent the grille from moving and using steady force, slowly pull the locking clip out toward you while turning it 90 degrees counter clockwise.

Use your other hand to prevent the grille from moving and using steady force, slowly pull the locking clip out toward you while turning it 90 degrees counter clockwise. You will need to pull it enough to get the locking clip to rest inside the retaining tabs indicated in picture 2. Caution! Since the locking clip is under a significant amount of tension, please take care not to release the locking clip outside of the retaining tabs or the locked position, as this can warp the clip or dislodge it out of position.

Once the locking clip is safely positioned within the retaining tabs, gently pull the hood emblem out from the top of the grille assembly.

Once the locking clip is safely positioned within the retaining tabs, gently pull the hood emblem out from the top of the grille assembly. Tip: If the emblem does not come out smoothly, check to see if the locking clip is getting caught on the grille. It may need to be rotated slightly.

Sometimes the replacement emblem is shipped in the closed position so when reinstalling, ensure your replacement emblem is in this open position with the locking clip resting within the retaining tabs indicated by the green arrows.
