Applicable Models:

Mercedes-Benz R170 (1998-04)

Use Star Diagnostics if possible to narrow down roof problems

Performance Gain:

Ideally, fixes roof operation

Complementary Modification:

Repair or replace leaky hydraulic cylinders

SLKs' Vario retractable hardtops are probably their biggest single selling point. This impressive system coordinates switches, cables and hydraulics. However, the top can be a huge headache when it doesn't work as intended. If the controller senses that one component isn't working, it can cancel the whole job of lowering or raising the roof.

Other articles show how to operate the roof manually when necessary. Here, we reveal the locations of the nine switches in the R170's Vario roof system.

The actual switches are often part of larger housing assemblies. This permits the switches to be replaced independently, avoiding the higher cost of replacing the whole shebang. Before replacing switches, though, verify that their wires aren't damaged. The roof's many moving parts can kink or sever wires.

OE part numbers for the switches are listed below. The factory replacement parts come with pigtails and plugs. SLK owners who possess soldering skills can likely find comparable micro-switches for a few bucks at an electronic parts supplier, then add the necessary pigtails themselves.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Yeah, that doesn't make sense. Unless it is normal function, for example when the heat is off, the scarf is off. Best bet is to check function using a scan tool. Check if the scarf is being commanded off when the top is opened.- Nick at Pelican Parts
Frank Comments: Hi My mate has a 350 05 slk .Problem is as soon as the roof starts to open or starts to close the neck scarf and the heated seats go off. I would welcome any clue as to why this happens Many thanks Frank

Followup from the Pelican Staff: The system may have a stored fault not allowing it to function. I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes. If the system is not working properly, a fault code will be set. This will be your best bet when diagnosing. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Mouny Comments: Hi Guys,Had my SLK 230 for 5yrs now and never had any problems until recently having a full respray of the car since then a number of things has started to go wrong the worst being the failure of the Vario roof, when moving the switch to operate the roof it lights up the windows go down but the boot lid strains to move in fact the drivers side of the boot lifts not even an inch and wont more any more and the opposite side does not move at all,it then wont return back to the shut position without a little help from me. Is there a simple fix or am in the realms of getting a second mortgage to fix it,
August 7, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hard to say. It could be a fluid or microswitch issue. I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes. If the system is not working properly, a fault code will be set. This will be your best bet when diagnosing.

Roy.halaby Comments: Hello nick, m working on my slk230 1997, whats the drive unit of the lid ? And yeah the pump tries to close the lid, it does not stop until i stop pushing the button ,then i open the trunk at push the lid manually and then push the button again to close the rear windows.
July 16, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: We didn't have an SLK in 1997, so my info may not match your vehicle.

The luggage lid switch may not be in the right state. The 1998 model we have had a hydraulic lid, so the cylinder or actuator for that lid may be your issue, if not the switch.

roy.halaby Comments: Hello, it s roy , i have an issue, while opening or closing the roof, the left trunk lid don't close , i have to open the trunk and push the left lid manually into its lock , that s the only way to latch the left lid,
and one more thing if possible , i can open the roof whenever i want, but sometimes when i want to close it, i push the button , nothing happens , no pump sound... nothing , i have to wait and keep trying until it closes...
thanks in advance :

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You didn't mention what vehicle you are working on. If the left lid is staying open, check the drive unit for it. It may be faulty. Is it trying to close the lid? Is it motionless? - Nick at Pelican Parts
Kal Comments: Hi, my 2001 230 roof goes down fine but if I try and raise it again with the engine running the light flashes and nothing else happens. If I turn the engine off and keep ignition on, the roof goes up fine. Is this a sign of something about to fail and if so what

Riccardo Comments: Hello!
Today i would like to close me roof. Trunk is opened, the other plastic thing back of the roll bar is opened too, the roof is started to rise up, but after 2-3 sec. it is stopped. Liquid level is ok, fuse is ok as i saw. Maybe it is a sensor. Which can cause this problem? Thank you! :

Followup from the Pelican Staff: It could be a position switch is not in the correct state. I would check top position using a Mercedes-benz scan tool. - Nick at Pelican Parts
wsguy Comments: 1999 SLK have a recurring problem where roof will not retract into the trunk. No flashing light, replaced the open limit switch and it worked for three days and has same behavior. Can you provide information on the roof computer so I can test the wires to the limit switch? Seems if I pull out the trunk lining it will work for a while, suspect a cracked wire.
June 2, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don’t have that info.

I would grab a repair manual. It will have the info.

Colleen Comments: How can I close the roof manually as talked about. Have had the 1999 slk230 to the dealer 3 times. The answer "we can't find the problem". As usually every time the try t0 close there is no problem--I love my car please tell me how to close it manually!!!
May 5, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You need two people to do so.

Gain access to the hydraulic pump. Release the pump screw by unscrewing it, then release the top latches and manually lift the top.

it is a complicated procedure and that is a very brief summary. We don't currently have that tech article. If we get a chance to perform the procedure, we will be sure to document it.

I would grab a repair manual. It will have the procedure, special tools and torque specs.

Jonatan Comments: Hi, I have experienced some trouble with my roof not folding. The mechanism seems fine, works most of the time but there have been times, especially during hot Days in the sun, where the roof won't fold. the trunk lid opens but the roof won't go down. Sometimes when bringing it back up the trunk opens but the roof won't rise. I have changed the S69/9 without positive result. Any thoughts? BR Jonatan

Followup from the Pelican Staff: There will be a few. I don't have the exact locations. There should be switches on the latches at the windshield, trunk and a few spots on the frame. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Pete Comments: Hi, i got rear ended a bit, side windows can roll down, trunk lid raised one inch and then stop, i then unlocked the trunk, raise up the trunk lid, saw S118/1 left tubular frame locked limited switch released, S118/2 right tubular frame locked limited switch is not released.
I then latched the lock to closed position, was able to close the trunk lid back to original position fully, unlock the trunk and the close the lid properly.

Does it sound like I have a bad right tubular frame lock switch after the accident?

Many thanks.
