Rear Bumper Replacement

The R170's rear bumper isn't as accessible as its front. The rear bumper's mounting hardware is behind the trunk panels, which are held in place with bolts and plastic rivets. The panels are not necessarily difficult to remove, please see our article on removing the trunk panels.

Once the panels are out, the bumper is freed with six fasteners and by unplugging the antenna. The bumper can then be repaired, repainted or replaced as necessary.

With the trunk panels removed the roof's closed limit switch must be activated so that the trunk can be returned to its "normal" horizontal position. The manual recommends carefully wrapping a zip-tie around the switch.

Next, the antenna cable is unscrewed from the amplifier.

Next, the antenna cable is unscrewed from the amplifier. The cable's body grommet is then pushed outward, out of its mounting hole.

Remove the toothed lock washer (green arrow) secures the bumper on either side, inboard of the taillights.

Remove the inner fender bolts (green arrow) that is located on each side.

Remove the inner fender bolts (green arrow) that is located on each side. Under each of these bolts is a flat washer and a rubber sealing washer, which should be replaced if it's deteriorated.

Remove the fastener in the wheel well arch on each side.

The bumper is now free and can be pulled away from the body.

The antenna cable is long enough that the bumper can be set on the ground while the lead is routed through the body hole.

Installation is the reverse of the removal.
