Change cabin air filter

Every 10,000 miles or so, you should change the engine air filter in your Mercedes-Benz R170. The air filter protect the air intake system, valves, pistons, cylinder walls, and engine oil from dust and debris that can be sucked in under normal operation. Replacement is a snap and should take only take 30 minutes or so.

Begin by opening the hood and having a look at the engine. The air filter is located in the air filter box on the front right side of the engine bay.

The air box is held on by two clips along with three plastic tabs that sit in slots. While it is possible to change the air filter by simply unclipping it and sliding the top of the air box from the housing it is a much better idea to remove the lid completely so you can clean inside the air box housing.

Use a flat head screw driver and loosen the hose clamps on the two hoses attached to the air box lid. Slide the clamps over the hoses and slip the screw driver between the hoses and the openings to help break the seal, then slide the hoses off. Leave the wiring harness attached.

Next unclip the two clamps on the air box and slide the lid out of the tabs.

Move the lid out of the way while leaving the wiring harness attached to it.

Now you can remove the old filter, clean the air box housing and install your new filter.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

Begin by opening the hood and having a look at the engine.
