Replacing the Door Window

Before the window can be replaced, the door panel must be removed. Replacing the door side panel is a simple task if you use a gentle touch and patience. It is easy to break the clips that hold the panel in place if you use too much force. A trim tool is handy but not required. This job can be accomplished with a large flat head screwdriver and a small Phillips head screwdriver. On the inside of the door near the catch clasp remove the flash plate by unscrewing the Phillips head screws using a small Phillips head screwdriver. The screws are small and likely to be lost if you do not immediately put them in a small box or baggie. Refer to the article on door panel removal.

Before you do any work on your car it is important that you wear safety glasses, work gloves and dispose of all fluids in a safe manner. Coolant is poisonous and should be treated as such. Animals and small children have been known to die from ingesting coolant. If you have to jack up your car, make sure to use jack stands and chock your wheels as well as applying the parking brake. Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If you're working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability. Always wear eye and hand protection. Disconnect the battery before working on your car.

Before the window can be removed, the seal trim has to be removed. Using a flathead screwdriver, gently lift the seal trim from the doorframe. Use care so as not to bend the clips. They are easy to break and difficult to source.

The door seal will have to be moved to one side in order to be able to remove the window.

It is advisable to clamp the window in place in order to ensure the window does not fall.

Using a 10mm socket with a 3-inch extension, loosen and remove the lower fastening bolts of the window guide.

Be careful not to drop the window stay clip into the door.

Move the window down until you see the last clip that is in place.

Remove the spring clip and flashing from the side of the door.

Push the window slightly to the front of the car then slip it backwards through the open where the flashing was.

The window is now free and can be replaced.

Installation is the reverse of removal. Refer to the article on window adjustment when replacing the window. A new window will require adjustment.

SL56086 Comments: Hi, thank you for the tutorial. My window stopped working and I took the door apart. What is the brass colored part attached to the window in Figure 11? Do you sell a replacement for that? Mine has completely corroded and I would like to purchase a replacement. I cannot seem to locate the term for that part. Thank you.
