Replace trunk lid emblem

One simple way to improve the looks of your Mercedes is to replace a faded broken rear trunk star. Replacing the star is relatively easy and should take no more than 30 minutes. The trunk star emblem is a press fit into the rear trunk lid. The star is held in place with three small plastic grommets.

Begin by placing a rag near the center of the trunk star. This is to protect the paint from damage as we will be prying the star up and off the trunk lid. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry up the center section of the hood star from the trunk lid. You'll probably end up destroying the trunk star in the process as it is very flimsy. Take your time and work carefully as it is very easy to damage the paintwork around the star.

Once the star is removed, you'll need to remove the old grommets from the trunk lid. Use a pair of pliers to carefully grab the grommet by the edge and pull it out of the trunk lid. Once removed, clean the area around the trunk lid and wax it.

Now take the new grommets and push them into the holes on the trunk lid until they seat at the flange. Now take the new trunk star and orient it so that the ring on the outside matches the curvature on the trunk lid. Once oriented correctly, press the star down in the center until it will go no further.

This is the new trunk star and plastic grommets that hold the trunk star in place on the W210 Mercedes.

To remove the old star, you will need to place a rag or paper towel next to the star to protect the paint and use a flat head screwdriver to pry the old star off at the center (green arrow). Keep in mind that you will probably break the star in trying to remove it.

Once the star is removed, you'll see three white plastic grommets that sit in the holes for the trunk star.

Once the star is removed, you'll see three white plastic grommets that sit in the holes for the trunk star. You'll want to carefully pull the old ones out with a pair of pliers as shown here.

After the grommets have been removed, you may want to use some car wax to try and remove the shadow of the old trunk star on the trunk lid.

Press the new plastic grommets into the holes on the trunk lid so that the flange on the grommet seats on the trunk lid as shown here.

Press the new trunk star into the grommets.

Press the new trunk star into the grommets. Make sure that you orient the star correctly. There is a curve in the outer ring of the star that follows the curve of the trunk lid. Once oriented, press the trunk star down fully at the center to secure it in place.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: if hot, check if the opposite side has ground. You may be missing that side of the circuit. - Nick at Pelican Parts
