Auxiliary Cooling Fan Belt Replacement

The Mercedes-Benz W210 chassis (non-4MATIC models) uses an interesting auxiliary fan setup. One fan motor does the work of two by utilizing a small belt linking the two fans. Over time, this fan belt can snap, rendering one fan useless. This can impact the effectiveness of your air conditioning as well as the cooling system of the car in very hot climates. An easy way to check if the belt is good is by turning one of the fan blades by hand in the front of the car once the outer plastic grille has been removed. If the other fan blade turns, the belt is in place and working. If the other fan blade does not turn, then it's time to read though our article and replace the belt.

Begin by removing the two plastic pins holding the outer fan grille in place (green arrows).

Begin by removing the two plastic pins holding the outer fan grille in place (green arrows). Use a screwdriver to pry them up and out of the radiator support panel. Pull the plastic outer fan grille out and set it aside.

Now locate the five 10mm bolts holding the upper portion of the radiator support frame to the car (green arrows).

Now locate the five 10mm bolts holding the upper portion of the radiator support frame to the car (green arrows). Also pry out the two large spring clips holding the radiator frame to the support panel (purple arrows).

Lift the upper radiator support frame up and turn it over.

Lift the upper radiator support frame up and turn it over. On the inside, you'll see the two plastic clips that hold the hood release cable to the panel (green arrows). Pop the cable out and set the upper frame aside.

Remove the two 10mm bolts holding the top of the fan assembly to the A/C Condensor (green arrows).

Remove the 13mm bolt holding the horn to the bracket (green arrow) and un-plug the electrical connections.

Pry the plastic cover off the fan shroud at the upper right corner of the fan assembly.

Pry the plastic cover off the fan shroud at the upper right corner of the fan assembly. Underneath you will see both the service port for the air conditioning and also the electrical connection for the fan motor (green arrow). Squeeze the connector to release it from the fan assembly. Now lift the whole fan assembly out of the front of the car.

As you can see here, the belt was missing from our project car.

As you can see here, the belt was missing from our project car. In this picture, you can see the two pulleys that are bolted to the back of each fan.

Take the new belt and wrap it around one pulley with the V shaped groove facing inward.

Take the new belt and wrap it around one pulley with the V-shaped groove facing inward. Now wrap the other end around the other pulley and carefully "walk" the belt around the other pulley by turning the fan blade while you hold the belt in place. If you do it right, the belt will pop into place.

Make sure that the V shaped groove of the belt is firmly seated in the pulley of each fan.

Make sure that the V-shaped groove of the belt is firmly seated in the pulley of each fan. It is very easy to get the belt oriented incorrectly, so take your time when setting it in place. All that's left to do now is re-install the fan assembly and you're all set.

Chris M Comments: I ordered the Behr replacement fan for my 2002 E430 because the belt jammed up the old fan and burned out the motor. Directions were great, but I also had to remove the horn mount and the clips holding that black tubing you can see in that picture Figure 5 because it was very rigid and would not let me pull the fan out. Also no hood release cable under the support frame on my model. Saved $700 off dealer estimate and A/C is blowing nice and cold. Thanks!

TimO Comments: Thanks for the excellent DIY info, it worked great. I've got a small tip. If the plastic snap-in pins described in step 1 are broken or missing, the screw-in type drywall anchors you can buy at a hardware store make a great substitute. They screw in to the existing holes, and tighten up nicely. I used "Twist-n-Lock" brand.

Daniel Comments: Great instructional!!!!!!! It took me about 45 minutes, however I have a question. Whoever owned the car before me took the positive wire and tied it into a line that is hot whenever you turn the ignition switch to the on position probably a sensor went out and it was a cheap fix for them can you tell me what sensor I need, and a picture of where it goes?
