Fuel pressure regulators are an occasional source of frustration for the do-it-yourselfer. Sometimes, they don't show any obvious indication of failure, leaving you puzzled when your car stumbles on acceleration. Testing a regulator can be a bit difficult as sometimes the fault won't appear until the car has reached a certain temperature.

The first step in diagnosis is to go over the basics. Is the fuel pump operating? Is the fuel filter clogged? Is there actually any fuel in the vehicle? Believe it or not, many people overlook these steps. The next step in determining if the regulator is bad is to check the fuel pressure on the car. There are basically two ways to do this. You can use the test port on the fuel rail itself which requires you to rig up a Schrader valve type connection to a pressure gauge, or you can rig up a pressure gauge in-line down by the fuel filter. Either way you do it, make sure you have a gauge that is rated for fuel injection pressures (at least 50psi) and that all connections to the gauge are correct.

Turn the key on and off several times to energize the fuel pump. This will build up pressure in the fuel rail and begin to register on the gauge. The system operating pressure is 35-40psi. If the operating pressure is below 35psi or fluctuates wildly, it's probably a good bet that the regulator is bad. If you pull off the vacuum connection and there is fuel dribbling from the nipple, the diaphragm inside has failed and the regulator must be replaced (this was the case on our project car).

Be prepared: Work in a well ventilated area. Keep a fire extinguisher near you at all times and know how to use it correctly. No sparks or open flame around. We will be working around gasoline here. It's better to be prepared than have that one time where everything goes wrong.

Begin by pulling the protective cover off the valve cover to the rear of the fuel pressure regulator (green arrow).
Figure 1

Begin by pulling the protective cover off the valve cover to the rear of the fuel pressure regulator (green arrow).

Remove the vacuum hose (purple arrow) that attaches to the nipple on the fuel pressure regulator (green arrow).
Figure 2

Remove the vacuum hose (purple arrow) that attaches to the nipple on the fuel pressure regulator (green arrow).

Once the vacuum connection is removed, locate the circlip (sometimes called a snap ring) that holds the regulator in place.
Figure 3

Once the vacuum connection is removed, locate the circlip (sometimes called a snap ring) that holds the regulator in place. Use a pair of circlip pliers to squeeze the two holes in the circlip together (green arrows). This will compress the spring and allow you to remove it from the groove on the inside of the housing. It's also a good idea to clean any grime or dirt that has accumulated around the regulator to prevent it from falling inside the fuel rail.

Once the circlip is removed, pull up on the regulator to remove it from the fuel rail.
Figure 4

Once the circlip is removed, pull up on the regulator to remove it from the fuel rail. Be prepared for a small amount of fuel to come out. Clean the mating surfaces inside the fuel rail.

Fit the new regulator into the fuel rail, making sure to orient the vacuum nipple like the old regulator.
Figure 5

Fit the new regulator into the fuel rail, making sure to orient the vacuum nipple like the old regulator.

Now fit the circlip over the regulator to lock the regulator in place.
Figure 6

Now fit the circlip over the regulator to lock the regulator in place. Re-fit the vacuum line and that's it, you're done. Keep in mind that it may take a couple of seconds longer to re-start the car. This is because the fuel pump needs to build up pressure again. This is normal.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Limp mode? What codes are stored? - Nick at Pelican Parts
Petra Comments: Have done a fuel return test today injector no 2 is badly returning fuel causing low fuel pressure

Injector ordered will replace

Unless cleaning would work what do you think ????

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would replace. Cleaning won't fix a flow problem. Unless you send it to a reconditioner like Linder Fuel Injectors. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Petra Comments: Hi

Mercedes e220 cdi 2003 will not start cold or no and if accelerate likes of over taking a car it cut outhe have to always use easy start. Fuel filter is always half empty even after filled up to top. Now started going into limp mode

I would like your opinion please on to his isue and what are the likely causes

Thank you

Jeremy Comments: Hi, Great site. My 2002 E320 4 Matic had LOUD whining fuel pump. Had sporadic starting problems but ran well. Replaced it and was quiet for a while. Now, same whining after 6 months. Just put in brand new one and it whines too! Is there an in-tank filter that is starving this? Could this be the regulator? Thanks !
October 30, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would perform a fuel delivery system test. Check fuel pressure, volume and quality. The faulty item should show up in one of those tests. If loud, it could be aerated or restricted. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Macucule Comments: I changed the engine of my mercedes benz e320 v6 1998, and installation, but when I turn the engine it starts and then dies soon, the key and the engine worked perfectly in the car where it was taken, ask for help to solve this problem!
October 3, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I can't help without knowing what is missing from the system when you are trying to start it. When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and fuel pressure, volume, quality and engine compression. Are there any fault codes? Once you figure out what is missing, it will be easier to diagnose.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: More common to have an air metering issue, Either a leak or faulty MAF sensor. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Wingfield Comments: Hello.
I had sent earlier on that my car a Mercedes Benz e320 cdi 2001 would cut power while running and later developed hard start in the morning. I had it diagnosed and discovered that it was the MAF sensor causing the engine to stall, and the glow plugs causing the hard start as it was only one working out of six. I changed all the glow plugs and error codes erased and hard start is over.
Then the car went into limp mode after starting.
Today am just from changing the maf sensor and tried driving it around to see if it would restore its memory to normal, but to no avail.
How do i get the car out of limp mode from a mechanical as well as layman's perspective? Your professional advice is ever valued.
Thankyou

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Check if the intake air ducts have an air leak. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Wingfield Comments: Good morning. thank you for your valued responses to my questions.
I have the carMercedes E320 W210 CDI diagnosed and no faults were detected and yet power cuts when the car is running slowly or idle.
Yesterday it would start then go off till i raved it too much after it started and drove it for about 310 kilometers without any difficulties. But today, it took almost 3 hours just to start and mechanic came and said its airlock. Now Is it possible that it could be airlock that causes the power to cut because there is a fuel return tube that was connected or it could also be the battery or air mass?
Your response is ever valued

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Airlock? Most likely a fuel delivery problem. I would check the fuel pump. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Wingfield Comments: Hai. I have a mercedes W210 E320 CDI.
I bought it with 235/45/ZR17 low profilewheels. Over the years, i have noticed that its too low and touches almost every hump i drive over.
I need your advice as to what wheel size could be a suitable replacement in order to raise it up perfectly.
Your advice would be highly appreciated.

Wingfield Comments: Hello.
This was my earlier question and thanks for your response.
I have a mercedes benz E320 CDI 2001 W210.
Recently,it started having hard start in the morning and sometimes the engine stops running while am on the road regardless of the speedbut usually when am slow and i have to stop and re-start the car. What could be wrong with my diesel engine?
Another thing is that the anti-theft siren doesnt go ononly lights flash.
Finally, the radio just went off one night while i was driving and it couldnt go on again till now.
I would be grateful for your help.

Another concern.
I checked the fuel system, but it still goes off when running and hard cranking.
What else can i do? Could there be a problem with either the MAF sensor or Oxygen sensor?
Your advice would be appreciated.

Joe Benz Comments: 96 s320 runs great at idle, I give it gas and it starts to choke then accelerate, choke then accelerate, let it idle and idle is fine. No engine light came on? this happened on a hot day, I got the car home just in idle speed and parked it. Next day started it and it run fine. This has happened twice a few months back. Any thoughts

Kelz Comments: hi, i have a 98 ml320. when i crank it it runs good but when you give it gas it revs up and starts to bog down. When you first crank it and drive it accelerates up to around 50 to 60mph. But when you slow down and stop then accelerate again it wont go past 25mph and starts cutting back and bogging down. I have already changed maf, egr valve, spark plug and wires, and the fuel pump is coming on but the fuel pressure is not going on up when you rev the engine.

Pat Comments: I have a 1995 C280 with an intermittent starting problem. Much of the time the car starts fine and runs strong, but occasionally on start up usually if it's been running recently, it will give a hard start and barely idle. It will rev fine and still drive without any apparent loss of power, but will want to idle down around 100-200 rpm and often die. The other symptom is, when this problem is evident, a loud squealing noise seems to be coming from the intake manifold area. The noise only happens when the car is experiencing this problem and does not change with rpm. Typically I'd start with looking at the fuel pump or pressure regulator, but the noise has me a little baffled.

PeterB Comments: Hi My Car is a 1996 E320. The car intermittently stops starting or fails while driving. When it is in its Fault mode and won't start the Fuel pump does not run. If i remove the control unit 210 540 00 72 and expose the relay board I can made the car run and start by holding the 4th relay from the left hand side facing the relays When this relay is held the Fuel pump runs.. when this runs the car can be started and the engine seems fine. Can you point me in the direction of this fault please ?
February 7, 2016
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The issue could be the control side for the relay. I don't have wiring to look at the circuit. I would grab a wiring diagram, then trace the control for the relay. If you can share the wiring with me, I can offer more insight. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Mercaholic Comments: Hi, I have a 1994 c200 w202. She runs well then will start to miss. If I stop and restart it will sometimes run fine again. Change just about everything except the wheel nuts!

The car idles and runs fine when started up but once engine has warmed up it starts to sputter on acceleration and idle rough when I come to a stop. I have changed the idle control valve and the oxygen sensor without much change. The fuel makes the weeeeee noise and at low temperatures when I break at stop signs or robots the engine switches off, but it again starts well at once without problems. Again in the morning when I start it, it smokes for about two or three minutes and the smoke goes away. But once the engine is hot it doesn't smoke or switches off when I break. Tell me what I need to change immediately.

Doc Comments: Hi, I have a 1993 400 SEL and when I took it to have the emmissions test done it failed the idle portion of the test for high hc's. You can smell the exhaust while it's running and the technician stated that when changing from high rpm to idle that the car is dumping alot of fuel in the system for some reason. Since then I have replaced the spark plugs, air filter, cleaned the distributor caps, inspected the rotor buttons, and replaced the fuel filter. I am considering changing the fuel regulator. What do you suggest.

I friend of mine told me that it could be some air stuck inside yhe fuel line. He also told me that there is a valve like thing which looks like the valve on yhe tires that can release fuel once pressed but i cant locate it.all i would like to know is where exactly is this valve located

Thank you

Followup from the Pelican Staff: The pump should self-bleed. You may have damaged the pump from running it low. Check if the pump is getting power and ground and is actually running. if so and there is no pressure, the pump may be faulty. - Nick at Pelican Parts
DHouse Comments: I have a 1998 C230 - about every 2 days, hesitation starts and it wont drive above 40mph, and pressing the gas pedal does nothing. When the car rests, its ok for a few days. Had the fuel pump replaced already. Thinking Mass air sensor?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: COuld be a fuel pump. I can't help without knowing what is missing from the system when you are trying to start it. When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and fuel pressure, volume, quality and engine compression. Are there any fault codes? Once you figure out what is missing, it will be easier to diagnose.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Could be a faulty crank sensor or a faulty DME. I would start by checking the DME for fault codes. If the system is not working properly, a fault code will be set. This will be your best bet when diagnosing.

BigPun Comments: Sorry, Thought this would show up on the same thread with my user name. I am getting fuel, but no fire about 60 psi. at rest 30 psi while cranking. No fire! NO Fault codes. Changed both Crank and Cam sensors.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: If you have no spark, check signal to the coil to fire. You didn't mention what vehicle you are working on. - Nick at Pelican Parts
BigPun Comments: Not sure on the key if it is related or not, just wanted to ad this. I did get it to start again today. When it did start everything ran fine, no missing or stalling at all. While running tried as best as I could to move wires and different connections etc. to see if it would die. No such luck ran great. I let it run for about 20 minutes and drove in the driveway onlydid not want to get stranded again. Turned car off and tried to restart. It acted like it was going to start, but failed to start. tried to unplugging and re plugging Cam and crank sensors along with other sensors but the car would not start. Not sure what direction to go now. Logic tells me either the ECM/ECU or since the issue with the keys could the ignition module cause it not to fire?
November 24, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Without checking for fault codes, we won;t know if the key is the issue.

BigPun Comments: I am getting fuel pressure when the pump comes on 60psi. I am not getting fire. Side note, about a year ago the key would not turn. the only way I could start it was by using the spare key that is non remote. Soon after spending $350 on a new fob key the original one started working again. Today I tried the extra key to make sure. the spare non fob/remote key would not turn. No codes have been recorded.
November 24, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hmm. sounds like a key issue. With no fault codes I would think not though. There will usually be a fault code for engine start blocked or bad key. - Nick at Pelican Parts
BigPun Comments: I have a 99 E320 4matic. About a year ago it started to die right after starting. I could restart and most of the time no other problems, sometimes you had to restart up to 3 time. Then it would not start at all. I replaced the fuel pump and filter but still had the intermittent starting problems. It failed to start once again so I replaced both the cam and crank sensors. This seemed to fix the not starting problem, but would still die while starting as explained above, but would always start. Last week while traveling back home my car died while going 75mph down the hwy. would not start. you can hear the fuel pump coming on sometimes but not all the time. got it to start twice and ran okay but would not start. you can hear the fuel pump come on sometimes but not always. I also swapped out the fuel pump relay.

Hello I have a 2009 s550. Any thoughts on the erratic fuel pressure? It held 45psi when only accessories were on
And leaked to 30 psi in 10 minutes. Maybe injector or fuel regulator leak?

Richard Comments: 2000 Mercedes Benz 230E Kompressor. Runs fine. With little budget to work with ,the issue is trying to get it to pass smog without costing me a fortune in a repair shop. My inquiry is 2fold....#1. Engine light on ..Fault code reads a problem with the "lowe fuel rail" .. I'm assuming "fuel pressure regulator" replacement would be a good start, correct?
#2. While refueling , i always have to manipulate the gas pump nozzle by pulling up on that rubber boot ...what causes this and how do I correct it ?
January 20, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would need the fault code number to comment on #1. #2 may be a restricted or faulty vent line to the fuel tank. - Nick at Pelican Parts

tagrtbot Comments: high i have a problem car will not start 1st few times in morning but if i over rev engine then turn off the next morning the car start with no problems is that pump or pressure regulator
many thx
October 20, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don[t understand how over revving the engine helps but you can try blocking off the return line first and swee if this helps you maintain pressure. If it does you have a bad pressue regulator. If you block the feed line after you have shut off the car and it starts the next day you have a bad check valve in the pump. You can try jumping the fuel pump relay for a few seconds in the morning and seeing if the car starts. - Kerry at Pelican Parts
george Comments: hi my car is audi tt 180hp engine code AJQ..I replace with new and then the fuel consumption increase high..when i remove the old one,i removed first the regulator and then the vaccum hose..
August 3, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You posted an Audi question in the Mercedes Benz forum. Make sure you installed the pressure regulator correctly (if that's what you changed) You may be sucking raw fuel through the vacuum hose directly into the engine - Kerry at Pelican Parts
