How to Maintain and Modify your new MINI

This article is one in a series that have been released in conjunction with Pelican Parts' new book, How to Maintain and Modify your new MINI The book contains 240 pages of full color projects detailing everything from performance mods to changing your brake pads. With more than 500+ full-color glossy photos accompanying extensive step-by-step procedures, this book is required reading in any MINI owner's collection. The book is due to be released in late 2015. See The Official Book Website for more details.

One of the advantages of modern technology is that certain systems on the automobile now use electronic components rather than mechanical connections. These offer a degree of reliability that was previously unavailable. Most cars nowadays have done away with the traditional cable-operated throttle assembly in favor of a drive-by-wire setup. What this means is that the gas pedal controls an electronic control module that translates pressure on the gas pedal into an electronic signal. At the other end, you have am electronically controlled throttle body that opens the throttle based on the signals it receives.

The benefits of this design are the elimination of a throttle cable or linkage that can wear or bind over time, the ability to reduce the amount of moving parts and also a simplified cruise control system.

One of the disadvantages of this setup is that you lose a certain amount of pedal 'feel'. You also have the unfortunate downside of delayed response and subdued acceleration, which can create problems in certain situations such as up-hill starts, quick gear changes and overtaking. The Sprint Booster works somewhat like a short shifter for the throttle. When installed, it halves the resolution for the pedal, essentially tricking the computer into thinking that the pedal is in a different position than it really is. For example, if the pedal is pushed a quarter of the way down, the computer will think it is pushed half way down.

At low revs, as compared to the stock configuration, the engine will respond in approximately half the time. Also, the delay time whilst accelerating in 3rd and 4th gear and the engine in the mid-range, is almost zero.

The installation of the Sprint Booster is quite easy. If you look at the side of the accelerator module, you'll see a small clip securing the unit to the floor of the car. You will need to remove the accelerator module in order to install the Sprint Booster. Use a flat head screwdriver to press the clip and carefully remove the module from the car. As you remove the module, you will want to angle the bottom portion to remove it from the rail on the floor.

Now turn the module over and remove the harness from the pedal. The Sprint Booster installs in between the module and the harness. Plug the end of the Sprint Booster into the accelerator module and the other end into the harness that originally connected to the module.

At this point, you may want to take a razor blade and make a small cut into the carpeting where the harness for the module emerges. This cut is to allow the larger portion of the Sprint Booster to be tucked inside the carpet and out of the way of the module's moving arm.

All that's left to do is maneuver the module back into position on the floor of the car and push it in until it seats on the clip. Now take the car out and enjoy the new throttle response.

The installation of the Sprint Booster on the R55/R56/R57 MINI is basically the same, except that the accelerator pedal is secured to the car a bit different. At the very bottom of the pedal, you will see a small plastic plug. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to pry out the plug. Underneath you will find a 5mm screw. Remove the screw and lift the accelerator pedal up and off of the floor. Once released, you can install the Sprint Booster as described above.

Slide the accelerator module back into the rail on the floor.
