The BMW Z4 wiper and washer system consists of the following:

  • Windshield wiper motor, arms and blades
  • Washer fluid reservoir in engine compartment
  • Windshield washer pump in fluid reservoir
  • Headlight washer pump in fluid reservoir (if equipped)
  • Heated windshield washer nozzles
  • Headlight washer nozzles in front bumper (if equipped)
  • Wiper and washer switch at right side of steering column - switch controls wiper intervals and other functions via the General Module (GM V)
  • Rain sensor at top of windshield (if equipped)

This article will cover replacing windshield wiper components. The wiper motor itself can fail, creating a situation where the wipers do not work or do not properly park. If the wipers do not work at all, first check the wiper fuse. Then check for the battery positive signal to the motor when the wipers are switched ON (refer to an up-to-date wiring diagram). Then check that the wiper pivots move freely and are not bound with corrosion. To do this, follow the steps below to remove the wiper assembly. Once removed, disconnect the wiper linkage from the wiper motor. Then confirm that the wiper transmission moves without binding.

To avoid marring the paint and trim, work with a plastic prying tool or wrap a screwdriver tip with masking tape before prying out body or interior items.

Keep in mind that when your car was serviced before, parts may have been replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have, so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If you're working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Do not work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

Vehicle models change and evolve, as they grow older, so the vehicle shown in our illustrations may vary slightly from yours. If something seems different, let us know and share your info to help other users. Do you have questions or want to add to the article? Leave a comment below. When leaving a comment, please leave your vehicle information.

Before beginning, note the position of the wiper arms (red arrows) at the bottom of the wiper cowl.
Figure 1

Before beginning, note the position of the wiper arms (red arrows) at the bottom of the wiper cowl. Take a measurement or snap a photo. This will help to get the wiper arms back in the same place when reinstalling.

Open the hood.
Figure 2

Open the hood. Then remove the wiper arm nut trim cap (red arrows). Do this for each wiper arm. Next, remove the two 16mm wiper arm nuts (green arrow). The inset photo shows the right side wiper arm. The left side wiper arm is the same.

I like to mark the position of the wiper arms using a crayon.

I like to mark the position of the wiper arms using a crayon. This helps to get the wiper arm in the same position when reinstalling. Next, you have to remove the wiper arms. Use the wiper arm puller to remove the wiper arm (red arrow).

If you don't have a wiper arm puller, wiggle the wiper arm to remove from it from the shaft.
Figure 4

If you don't have a wiper arm puller, wiggle the wiper arm to remove from it from the shaft. If you press on the wiper arm near the pivot it will loosen up. Then continue to wiggle it off. Be careful not to scratch the paint when the wiper arm comes loose.

Next, pull the weather strip (red arrow) off the front of the wiper cowl.

Working at the wiper cowl, remove the mounting fasteners (red arrows).
Figure 6

Working at the wiper cowl, remove the mounting fasteners (red arrows). Use a Phillips head screwdriver and remove the screw. Then lever the plastic anchor out of the firewall.

Now you have to remove the wiper cowl trim.
Figure 7

Now you have to remove the wiper cowl trim. Start by grabbing at left corner and pulling up, gently removing the trim piece from the base of the windshield. Once detached, remove from vehicle and store in a safe place. There are a number of trim clips (green arrows) that have to be detached. As you pull up, detach each one. Red arrow points to a trim clip as it is being detached.

Working at the wiper assembly, disconnect the wiper motor electrical connector by pressing the release tab (red arrow) and pulling it straight off.
Figure 8

Working at the wiper assembly, disconnect the wiper motor electrical connector by pressing the release tab (red arrow) and pulling it straight off. Then, unclip the plastic retainer (green arrows). Unclip the right side of the retainer and open it toward the left side.

Now it's time to remove the wiper assembly.
Figure 9

Now it's time to remove the wiper assembly. Start by removing the two T30 Torx wiper assembly fasteners (red arrows).

Once the fasteners are removed, slide the wiper assembly toward the left side of the vehicle.
Figure 10

Once the fasteners are removed, slide the wiper assembly toward the left side of the vehicle. Reverse the steps to install the new wiper assembly into the vehicle. Install all of the fasteners finger tight. Then tighten. This ensures the proper assembly alignment. Connect the battery, and turn the wipers ON then OFF. This will PARK the wipers. Reinstall the cowl and associated parts. Then install the wiper arms with the blades in the position they were removed and tighten the fasteners. Install the trim caps. Then reassemble the remaining items in the reverse order of removal. Once complete, check the wiper operation.
