Keep info with your service records

When performing repairs on your BMW Z4 it is important to be able to identify standard items and optional features. BMW Z4 models were option heavy due to being a higher level model. In this tech article I will do my best to list each available item by model year breaks. I am going to list the standard options and the new options with the year they became available.

Remember that your car may have been serviced before and had parts replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If you're working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

Our vehicle may vary slightly from yours as models do change and evolve, as they grow older. If something seems different, let us know and share your info to help other users. Do you have questions or want to add to the article? Leave a comment below.

Decoding your VIN

Your VIN (vehicle identification number) can be used to help purchase parts and identify vehicle options. The last seven numbers are all you need when ordering parts. However, it is important to know how to decode the entire VIN.

The VIN is located in many places.
Figure 1

The VIN is located in many places. Two reliable spots to read it are on the left lower corner of the dashboard (red arrow), looking through the windshield from outside the vehicle. Important VIN digit positions: The first 3 digits are the country of origin. The fourth and fifth positions are the vehicle model. Position 6 is the type of engine. The tenth digit of your VIN is the vehicle model year. The last seven digits are the serial number.

The VIN is also located on the driver door jamb, vehicle identification sticker (red arrow).
Figure 2

The VIN is also located on the driver door jamb, vehicle identification sticker (red arrow). You can also find your BMW model (red arrow).

Using the sticker on your driver door jamb, you can also determine the production date (red arrow).
