Better mileage

Complementary Modification:

Replace air filter

The mass air flow sensor (MAF) is used to measure the amount and temperature of air that is entering the engine at any one time. The mass air flow sensor senses the total amount of air passing the sensor and allows the fuel injection system to adjust the fuel mixture to compensate for cold weather and/or high altitude conditions.

The first indicator that you might have a problem with the MAF is the presence of a check engine light (CEL) on your dashboard. The check engine lamp can be caused by a wide variety of problems with the engine: you need to read the codes from the computer to get a starting clue as to what the problem is. If your MAF is not functioning properly, the engine will not be operating at peak efficiency, and you will most likely experience a loss in power and a decrease in gas mileage as a result. It's best to get the problem taken care of relatively quickly, as running the engine in this condition can potentially cause damage to other components like the catalytic converters.

Vacuum leaks and other air leaks in the system can cause MAF sensor errors. If you have leaks in your air intake downstream of the sensor, then the MAF will be sensing less air than the engine is actually receiving. You should carefully inspect all of your hoses, clamps and intake tubes for air leaks prior to replacing the sensor.

The MAF sensor is located in the front right corner of the engine bay (red arrow).

The MAF (red arrow) is mounted on the out tube from the airbox lid.
Figure 2

The MAF (red arrow) is mounted on the out tube from the airbox lid. It can be easily replaced without removing the lid (yellow arrow) but if you are changing the MAF now would be a good time to remove the lid and check and/or change the engine air filter as needed.

To replace the MAF, begin by disconnecting the electrical connection.
Figure 3

To replace the MAF, begin by disconnecting the electrical connection. Lift the grey tab up away from the connection and then squeeze in on the grey clip and gently wiggle and pull the connection off (red arrow).

Use a T20 Torx and unscrew the two Torx screws holding the MAF in place (red arrows).
Figure 4

Use a T20 Torx and unscrew the two Torx screws holding the MAF in place (red arrows). Use care when removing the screws and make sure you do not drop them down into the engine compartment. They are very small and are very easy to drop and lose--and very difficult to find when you do.

You can now pull the MAF out from the mount in the tube.

When installing the new MAF it is important not touch any of the sensor areas with your bare skin.

When installing the new MAF it is important not touch any of the sensor areas with your bare skin. It is best to handle the MAF by the wiring mount area. Installation is the reverse of removal.
