Headlight assembly looks better

The BMW E65 comes with the Angel Eyes headlight assembly. The Angel Eyes system requires the entire headlight assembly to be removed from the vehicle, which includes removing the front bumper cover. While the Angel Eyes feature is very attractive to look at it is not a quick repair so do not start it if you do not have at least three hours to perform the work.

The procedures are the same for both sides.

The Angle Eyes system on the E65 is the term referred to the lighting system that surrounds the two front headlights (red arrows).

The Angel Eyes system on the E65 is the term referred to the lighting system that surrounds the two front headlights (red arrows). If the light ring is out from around your headlights you will need to remove the front bumper and headlight assembly to replace the single bulb that powers both light rings.

Please see our article on front bumper cover removal for step by step instructions on removing the bumper cover.

There are six 8mm screws holding the headlight assembly in place, two on the top of the assembly (red arrows), two that are behind and below in the rear (yellow arrows) and two accessed from underneath (blue arrows).

There are six 8mm screws holding the headlight assembly in place, two on the top of the assembly (red arrows), two that are behind and below in the rear (yellow arrows) and two accessed from underneath (blue arrows). The two on the rear (yellow arrows) are removed by using a long extension with a magnet so when the screws come lose you will not loose them

With all the hardware removed slide the assembly a little forward, and disconnect the small upper wiring connection (red arrow).

Turn the cap counter-clockwise and remove it. You get a new cap with a seal when you purchase the new bulb so you do not need to worry about the condition of the seal on the old one.

Disconnect the wiring from the bulb.

Turn the bulb and base together and then remove from the housing.
