When performing repairs on your BMW E53 it is important to be able to identify standard items and optional features. BMW E53 models were option heavy like many other BMW models, with some options only offered at certain years. In this tech article I will do my best to list each available item by model year. I am going to list the standard options and the new options with the year they became available.

Remember, your car may have been serviced before and parts replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

Our vehicle may vary slightly from yours as models do change and evolve as they grow older. If something seems different, let us know and share your info to help other users. Do you have questions or want to add to the article? Leave a comment below.

Decoding your VIN

You VIN (vehicle identification number) can be used to help purchase parts and identify vehicle options. The last seven numbers are all you need when ordering parts. However, it is important to know how to decode the entire VIN.

The VIN is located in many places.
Figure 1

The VIN is located in many places. Two reliable spots to read it are on the left lower corner of the dashboard (red arrow), looking through the windshield from outside the vehicle. Important VIN digit positions are: The first 3 digits are the country of origin. The fourth and fifth positions are the vehicle model. Position 6 is type of engine. The tenth digit of your VIN is the vehicle model year. The last seven are the serial number.

The VIN is also located on the driver doorjamb, vehicle identification sticker (red arrow).
Figure 2

The VIN is also located on the driver doorjamb, vehicle identification sticker (red arrow). The vehicle model is also the same sticker (yellow arrow).

Using the sticker on your driver doorjamb, you can also determine the production date (red arrow).
