A faulty throttle housing (throttle body) can cause a number of problems, from a check engine light to a rough or surging idle. Before you condemn your throttle housing, be sure to inspect all the intake air ducts. They should be well sealed and free from cracks or tears. Check the function of your crankcase breather valve and inspect all the breather hoses. If a breather hose cracks or fails, the air leak can cause a rough idle or engine stalling. You may have to remove the throttle housing to access other components such as the crankcase breather valve and crankcase breather hoses.

In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with replacing the throttle body on BMW E53 models with a M62 8-cylinder engine. Be sure to work with a cool engine.

Remove the engine covers. See our tech article on engine cover removing.

The throttle housing is located at the front center of M62 8-cylinder engines (green arrow). Once the intake air ducts and engine covers are removed it is a snap to replace it.

First we have to remove the intake air duct that runs from the throttle housing (yellow arrow) to the mass air flow sensor (green arrow).

Working at the fresh air intake, remove the four plastic rivets (green arrows).

Working at the fresh air intake, remove the four plastic rivets (green arrows). Use a pair of pliers (inset) to remove the center rivet. Once all the center rivets have been removed, pull the duct up to detach it from the vehicle.

Then lift the duct up on the left side while detaching it from the duct (green arrow) on the right side.

Working at the mass air flow sensor, loosen the hose clamp using a flathead screwdriver (green arrow).

Next you will have to rotate the throttle housing duct up toward the left side of the vehicle in the direction of the green arrow.

Once detached from the mass air flow sensor, pull the duct off the throttle housing. There are two small hoses you have to disconnect in the following step. Be careful not to damage them during this step.

Working at the bottom of the intake air duct, detach the plastic line by squeezing the release collar (green arrows) while pulling the line off the duct.

When removing the duct, be sure not to misplace the rubber duct seal (green arrow).

Working at the throttle housing, disconnect the electrical connector by squeezing the plastic release tabs (on top and bottom of connector) and pulling off in the direction of the green arrow.

Remove the four 10mm throttle housing fasteners (green arrows).

Remove the four 10mm throttle housing fasteners (green arrows). Use a 1/4-inch ratchet with a two-inch extension to clear the surrounding components.

Once you have removedthe throttle housing fasteners, remove the throttle housing from the engine.

Before installing a new throttle housing, clean the sealing surface on the intake manifold (yellow arrow).

Before installing a new throttle housing, clean the sealing surface on the intake manifold (yellow arrow). Be sure to replace the throttle housing sealing O-ring (green arrow). Install the throttle housing in reverse order of removing. Use dish soap to lube the duct seal when reinstalling. This will make aligning the duct much easier. Be sure the electrical connector is properly engaged. Listen for an audible click.
