BMW X3 models have a sophisticated electronic control system. At the heart of the system are computers (control modules) used to make decision based on sensor and user inputs. The engine control module (DME) and transmission control module (TCM) work in conjunction to provide the best driving experience. They share inputs and data across communication circuits, this helps to cut down on wire and the number of sensors used. The computers are programmed with base parameters and utilize sensor inputs to make adaptations and control component outputs as needed.

The DME is housed in the E-box, located in the left rear of the engine compartment. The DME, relays and fuses are in this central location to keep wiring to a minimum. The box is cooled by an electric fan. The fan feeds air to the DME cooling shroud, then to the DME.

If this fan fails, the DME can overheat causing a failure. If you have a noisy fan, usually heard as a scraping under the left side of instrument panel, check the fan and replace it if needed. Often times, debris is found in the fan cage and can be cleaned.

Remember your car may have been serviced before and parts replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

The E-box fan is located under the instrument panel on the left side near the firewall. First, you will have to remove the E-box lid and access the connector (red arrow).

The E-box lid has to be removed.

The E-box lid has to be removed. Start by loosening the T25 Torx screws (red arrows).

Remove the E-box lid. Lift up at an angle and detach the tabs at hinge.

With the lid removed, you now have access to the fan electrical connector (red arrow).

With the lid removed, you now have access to the fan electrical connector (red arrow). Unlock the tab (purple arrow) and push the connector down to detach it from the E-box. I use a pick and a hook tool to do this, as hands won't fit (lower inset).

To make a little more room to work, pull the harnesses out of the mounting slots.

Disconnect the electrical connector by squeezing the tabs and pulling it apart.

Then attach string to it (red arrow).

Then attach string to it (red arrow). This will help when feeding the new fan wiring into the E-box. Attach the opposite end of the string to the hood strut (blue arrow) to prevent it from falling into E-box.

Working at the fan, (inside passenger compartment left footwell) remove the two Phillips head screws (red arrows).

Pull the main harness down and wedge below carpet line (red arrow).

Then slide the fan out of the e-box.

Then slide the fan out of the e-box. Feed the connector down with the string attached.

If you need to separate the fan from the housing, remove the Phillips head screw (red arrow).

Reverse steps to install the new fan.

Reverse steps to install the new fan. Be sure to pull the wiring harness and connector up (red arrow) and mount it to the side of the e-box. Reverse steps to reassemble.
