The shifter components allow the driver to move the transmission to different gears. The shift boot can dry rot and wear out over time, leaving a less than desirable interior appearance. Replacing the shift boot on your vehicle is quite easy and can be done in a short amount of time. It's also a great way to freshen up the look of your X3. You can make it even better by replacing the shift knob while you are at. The shifter bezel houses the lights and electronics for the shift position indicators. If fluids are spilled on them, they will fail. Keep this is mind when dealing with bezel faults.

In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with removing the shift boot on automatic transmission models. Manual transmission models are similar.

Remember your car may have been serviced before and parts replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

Our vehicle may vary slightly from yours as models do change and evolve as they grow older. If something seems different, let us know and share your info to help other users. Grab shift boot at rear and pull up and out with the shift indicator bezel.

Grab shift boot at rear and pull up and out with the shift indicator bezel. If there has been a drink spill (ex. coffee spilled) the shift boot may stick in bezel. You can clean the shift boot surrounding area before removing by using a tooth pick. This will remove most of the debris and allow boot to be pulled out easily.

Next, lift shift indicator bezel up and disconnect electrical connectors by pulling them straight out (red arrows).

Remove shift knob by pulling straight up (yellow arrow) and off shift lever.

Remove shift knob by pulling straight up (yellow arrow) and off shift lever. The knob can be on quite tight and may need a lot of force to remove it. I found if you slightly twist the knob back and forth while pulling up, it will come off easier. With that said, be careful because the plastic rod (red arrow) can break when knob is removed. Pull it up using a well controlled force.

Remove the shift boot by releasing the tabs at the sides (red arrows) and pushing it out toward the top of the bezel.

Then, lift and remove from bezel.
