The rear window wiper motor is a permanent magnet electric motor that runs the tail gate wiper. The motor speed is controlled via a switch with input from the steering wheel stalk switch. The motor drives a pivot that moves the wiper arms to clear the rear window.

This article will cover replacing the rear window (tail gate) wiper arm and motor on BMW X3 models. The wiper motor can be replaced in a few hours with minor disassembly of the tail gate. The wiper motor itself can fail, creating a situation where the wipers do not work or do not properly park. If you are having an issue with wiper blade chatter or streaking, try replacing your wiper blades.

Remember your car may have been serviced before and parts replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

Our vehicle may vary slightly from yours as models do change and evolve as they grow older. If something seems different, let us know and share your info to help other users. Working at the wiper arm pivot, open the plastic cap (red arrows).

Working at the wiper arm pivot, open the plastic cap (red arrows). Next, remove the 13mm wiper arm nut (yellow arrow). Then remove the plastic cap (red arrows) by unclipping it at the pivot.

Once the nut is removed, wiggle the wiper arm (red arrow) back and forth gently and lift it off.
Figure 3

Once the nut is removed, wiggle the wiper arm (red arrow) back and forth gently and lift it off. It should pop off the pivot. If it is stuck, there is a special tool used to remove it. My favorite--a battery terminal puller won't work due to space constrictions, so you'll have to find a thin two-jaw puller or the tool from BMW.

Working at the wiper motor, disconnect the wiper motor electrical connector by pressing the tab (yellow arrow) and pulling it straight out.

Working at the wiper motor, disconnect the wiper motor electrical connector by pressing the tab (yellow arrow) and pulling it straight out. Then squeeze the tabs on the larger connector and pull it straight out (inset).

Then remove the three 10mm motor fasteners (red arrows).

Remove the motor from the tail gate.

Remove the motor from the tail gate. Reverse steps to install new wiper motor. Be sure rubber grommet is in good shape when installing the new motor (red arrow). Connect the battery and turn the wipers ON then OFF. This will PARK the wipers. Install the wiper arm. Align your marks and then install the nut. Install the trim cap. Then reassemble the remaining items in reverse order of removal. Once complete, check the wiper operation.
